What week did you go in maternity leave?

I'm feeling super stressed at work at the moment, I'm 22 weeks and really considering trying to get through the next few weeks and going off at 30 weeks if my doctor can sign me off

What did you do?

34 weeks first pregnancy, but I do work 12 hr shifts and I was developing awful lower back pain after about 6 hrs of work.
2nd 34 weeks also as so knackered. But only had a weekend off as he decided to come early!

fastandthecurious · 21/09/2021 13:33

36 weeks with DS, probably would've been later but I had severe PGP and a really physical job so I just couldn't carry on.
It's a bit different with DD who I'm pregnant with now as our work policy is still for us to leave at 28 weeks on maternity suspension

mooloop · 21/09/2021 13:36

I'm currently 34w and planning to use annual leave to finish at 37w and then start mat leave from my due date.

georgarina · 21/09/2021 14:28

36 weeks with my first, not maternity leave but I left the job before starting training. Went into labour at 38+4

Second one 38 weeks - she arrived that day! So didn't get any time to prep :( I didn't want to waste any leave time before baby was here but wasn't expecting her that quickly..

fiadhflower · 21/09/2021 15:09

First pregnancy took a week’s holiday, then officially started mat leave on my due date. This time round, my plan is to take a week’s holiday and start mat leave at 39 weeks. Trying to keep as much leave as possible for when the baby is born.

LaundryForever · 21/09/2021 15:11

38 weeks for mine. I think if you are 'sick' after 32 weeks your maternity leave automatically starts if in the UK.

Bells3032 · 21/09/2021 15:12

I am 21 weeks. due the end of jan. planning to take maternity leave from 38 weeks (I am likely to have a c-section at 39 weeks) but planning to have from christmas off using annual leave (35ish weeks) as 1. just nicer and 2. been told cos i have muscular issues i might be in a lot of pain later in pregnancy

stargirl1701 · 21/09/2021 15:13

32 weeks with both DC.

I couldn't fit in my birth prep alongside my job.

Ughmaybenot · 21/09/2021 15:14

I’m currently 33 weeks, start annual leave 36w 5d, and have a c-section booked/start maternity leave officially 39w 5d.
I don’t do well with nothing much to do and so wouldn’t want to go off any earlier despite being very sick throughout the entire pregnancy.

desperate4spring · 21/09/2021 15:16

Dc1: Worked until 37 weeks as wanted as much time with my baby at the other end of may leave.

Dc2: Worked until 38 weeks as it was easier to stay at work than to be at home with a 2yo.

Dc3: Finished work at 28 weeks as dc2 had just started school and I wanted to put my feet up while I could 😁 It was blissful!

djt87 · 21/09/2021 15:17

I was going to work until 38 weeks but had annual leave to take so ended up going off at 36 weeks.

It was a good job too as I ended up being early and baby was born at 37 weeks! So glad I got that one week to at least get some sleep and do a few bits round the house.

I say if you can go off at 36 just in case baby comes early then do it.

Goingbackto5oh5 · 21/09/2021 15:31

I had 2 jobs at the time - 39 weeks at my main job (primary teaching so got to stay seated a lot more) and around 7 months at my second job (retail and on my feet all shift).

Greytminds · 21/09/2021 15:37

DC#1 - 38 weeks and had baby at 38+6

DC#2 - 37 weeks as much more tired and hadn’t sorted out a single thing for then baby at that point. 38+2 now and induction booked for the end of the week.

PeterPomegranate · 21/09/2021 15:44

Worked to 36 weeks and had 3 weeks a/l booked to take me to 39 weeks on basis most first babies are late. Son was born at 38 weeks which automatically triggered maternity leave to start.

My logic was to maximise time with the baby. I worked an office job so physically easy but was commuting on the tube in the summer and finding the commute tiring.

No one can tell you what to do. Depends on the job and how you’re feeling.

Iris2020 · 21/09/2021 15:47

Mine will be almost 38 weeks. I'm struggling at 35 weeks now but it's best to keep maternity leave for when baby is there.

willithappen · 21/09/2021 16:39

I'll be going at 38 weeks although loads of people think I'm mad. A lot of friends I know are going off at 28 weeks due to Covid and working in the care industry and being put on medical suspension.
I really want to work as much as possible so I can have the money in and then have as much time with baby as possible. 38 weeks brings me up to Christmas Eve, then have my holidays which would take me to 5th Jan and then baby is due 6th Jan although I think I may be offered induction from 39 weeks so may need to take it as it comes

Maneandfeathers · 21/09/2021 17:16

I went at 35 due to anaemia and so glad I did.

First pregnancy I lasted much longer and it was pointless struggling feeling so awful for so long. Wish I hadn’t bothered!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 21/09/2021 18:14

I went to WFH at 39 weeks and had DS by ELCS at 39+4 .

I had him right in the middle of busy season so I worked 10 days straight up to my c-section including a weekend event where I was on my feet all day.

I'd def take it easier if have another DC. I just really wanted to prove that I could do it and pregnancy/motherhood wouldn't change me IYSWIM.

HyphenCobra · 23/09/2021 08:47

First, quit job at about 22 weeks due to spd and manual job (was only part time and had only just started).

Second, left at 28 weeks due to bad spd and manual job think i took 4 weeks leave at 28 weeks then mat leave.

This time i have a desk job and well paid sick leave so going to try my best to keep going but 17 weeks and already struggling with spd :( .

I'm really envious of the ladies who can keep going until the end!!!
