Anybody still sleep on their stomach?

I'm 15 weeks gestation and I'm still sleeping on my stomach - I've always slept this way (even as a baby, apparently as soon as I could roll myself over, it's what I did!). Even if I start off trying to sleep on my side, as soon as I'm drowsy I roll over onto my tummy. So far it's not causing any problems I don't think - I do get pins and needle sensations in my thighs but I have that during the day too, so I'm not sure that it's caused by my sleeping position but probably the baby pressing on nerves/arteries.

I realise in my 3rd trimester I'll need to sleep on my side for safety - I'll have to wedge myself in with pillows and just hope I manage to get some sleep! But has anybody else slept on their stomach during the 2nd trimester until they got too big? Did it cause you/the baby any issues?

Hi, I still sleep on my stomach and I am 40 weeks. I did the same in my first pregnancy and no issues. It is kind of lying on my front slightly to the side to allow for bump. If I lie on my side fully my hip and shoulder and arm hurt, on my front I am so comfy and have been sleeping great through pregnancy. My tummy is huge too so I am not sure how it works but it just does! As far as I am aware it's only sleeping on your back that's not recommended so I actually never wondered if it was OK!

I always slept on my stomach before pregnancy. I slowly started to train myself to sleep on my side around 16 weeks. Got a pregnancy pillow and it really helped! I don't think it can cause any issues if you sleep on your front, but it's definitely better on your side.

I'm 15 weeks and sleep on stomach too. It's still the comfiest position upto now! Sure baby's not too squished and is just fine in there 😁

I'm a stomach sleeper and did it until it was impossible, at which point I had to get one of those huge long pregnancy pillows and build a sort of fort to get comfy/keep me on my side. The night after giving birth I was back on my stomach and it was bliss.

I'm a natural front sleeper, and like PP I struggle to sleep on my side as my hip, shoulder and arm hurt. I'm 26 weeks pregnant now and it's just become uncomfortable to sleep on my front, so I've been wedging myself up on one side (pillow under knee, pillow under shoulder and ribs) so that I've got a bit more room but can still be more on my front than side. I'm hoping this trains me more onto my side for when I get even bumpier!

Thank you so much for the reassurance everyone. Luckily the risks of sleeping on my back are not a problem - it feels as unnatural to me as side sleeping! Grin

Looks like I might have to try a long pregnancy pillow eventually - but unless anyone tells me it's too dangerous, I'll keep sleeping on my stomach as long as it's comfortable.

Or yes - two pillows would be another good idea, thanks. As I'd still prefer to be tilted more towards my stomach!

Thank you for posting this OP. I'm 14 weeks and I'm a stomach sleeper. I've bad insomnia and one of my go tos is getting up for a stretch and then back on tummy. Trying to train myself out of it but I find myself constantly moving to my tummy for comfort. Will have to build a pillow Fort soon to keep me on my side or at the very least a compromise of side tummy position

I got a dream genie pillow and that helped- meant I could still be in my semi front position but my bump was supported

I’m a front sleeper and it’s been the hardest thing for me to sleep on my side but it’s got easier.

I actually started side sleeping in my first trimester, I was scared of squashing the baby or restricting blood flow in some way (maybe just paranoid but I felt better not doing it)

I have a pregnancy pillow which helps and I’m now 36 weeks and fall asleep kn my side with no problem.

I do get hip pain so have to switch sides a lot, and obvs getting up to pee every 2 hours!

I long for the day I can stomach sleep again! Could be a way off as I’m having a c section too x

Thanks again everyone for the advice/reassurance. If 2 "normal" pillows don't work for me, I'll have a look at the dream genii. I'm not really showing much yet, and it doesn't feel like I'm "squishing" him at the moment so I'll keep stomach sleeping for a few more weeks unless it gets uncomfortable, then try pillows.

However thinking about it, I'll likely be having a c section too (pelvic problems plus first/only baby at 40) - and I hadn't really considered that I wouldn't be able to sleep on my scar for while afterwards so ought to get used to it sooner rather than later! Blush

I slept on my front basically the whole time. I carried DS in my back and had a really "flat" bump - so much so I had to go for a ton of extra growth scans (DS was 7.5lbs and awkward) . I think it became impossible at about 34 weeks, so I made myself a sort of nest of pillows and slept in that.

Cafeaulait27 · 20/09/2021 16:10

You can also get those things which are like a lilo with a hole cut out for the bump! I never did it but was tempted

DessieB · 08/03/2022 13:14

I used a Anna Pregnancy Pillow to sleep on my stomach and it was the best money I ever spent.

surprised12 · 08/03/2022 18:17

I'm 15 weeks and have never slept on my stomach until the last 4 weeks! Can't get comfortable on my side anymore and I wake up on my stomach!

I read that sleeping on your back can be risky but all other places seem fine!

Cakecakecheese · 08/03/2022 19:03

I'm 17 weeks and I practiced sleeping on my side from the first few weeks to wean myself off my stomach! I miss it but it's not comfortable on my stomach now.

Firsttimetrier · 08/03/2022 20:55

Consider buying the bbhugme pillow as you can make it a donut and sleep on your front. I purchased it at the weekend and had the best nights sleep so far!
