Will the midwife be able to get a heartbeat at 14 weeks

As I had a missed miscarriage at 14 weeks I asked for a scan at 14 weeks (last scan was nine weeks) and have been told the midwife will check for a heartbeat - can the heart beat be picked up this early?

I think so but there will be someone along who knows.

Hope all is well.

Sorry for your MM/C.

It can sometimes but not always. Hope all goes well for you.

Midwife did say if she could not get heartbeat they will then scan me. I think I am just a bit paranoid and need my mind putting to rest.

yes, mine got a heart beat at 11 weeks.
depends on a lot of things.
scan will defoshow heart beat.

have you got the mw for a routine visit or som ething else?

MerlinsBeard · 05/12/2007 11:01

it is possible but not always.

I think they should just scan you without faffing about trying to get a heartbeat first. If they don't get one because the baby is lying the wrong way you will just get into a state. It's not fair on you imo.

I have asked for a scan this morning and they said they would only give me one if they cant get a heartbeat with the doppler.

With both my pregs. she could pick themboth up with a doppler, I am assuming this is what you mean?
Heart beating could also be seen at 12 week dating scan.
If she can't hear it, you will be scanned, but at 14 weeks the heart is very quiet, what with your heart beating, your blood rushing round, you tummy rumbling over the top. The baby is also tiny and could well be tucked right up in a corner or something.
So if it is not clear/not picked up with the doppler, don't dispair if you can help it.

I had some bleeding at 15 weeks (a fortnight ago) and the doctor got a good strong heartbeat really easily with the sonicaid. I'm sure 14 weeks should be similar

Camillathechicken · 05/12/2007 13:00

possibly not, depends if the uterus is still low down in the pelvis. from about 16 weeks it should be doable every time. at least you will get a scan to reassure you if she cannot hear the heartbeat.

Agree with the others - my midwife told me to wait until 16 weeks. They MAY be able to get one earlier but not guaranteed and given your history it would be so upsetting for you to have to traipse off for a scan if they can't get a heartbeat. IMO they should scan you without making you go through that anxiety.

meglet · 05/12/2007 13:16

I had a heartbeat picked up at 11 weeks, so 14 should be possible.

Trix11 · 05/12/2007 13:46

Hiya thanks for your replys - just got back and the midwife picked up the heartbeat straightaway so that is reassuring - I can relax now.
