Had a scan today at 6 weeks. We saw one baby with a heartbeat. Wonderful. We also saw another shadow in there. Much smaller. Has anyone had this ?

I'm a new user so I cannot put pics up yet.

Was your scan in a hospital, OP? What did the sonographer say?

garrybubblo · 14/09/2021 21:50

It was a private scan. He said he wasn't sure what it was. That it's nothing to worry about and we could look again in a few weeks to see if it gets bigger. He mentioned usually a twin would be more similar in size to the embryo and this was much smaller, so probably just a shadow. But definitely nothing to worry about.

I can't shake the feeling it's a twin.

I've been analysing the scan footage and scan videos and it's intriguing ! But who knows !

I had lots of very early scans at St Mary's recurrent miscarriage clinic in London. The sonographers there were able to explain absolutely everything on my scans - including a shadow which for me was a bleed. I had to be extremely cautious throughout but it then resolved.

If you are worried, you could ask your GP for a referral to an early pregnancy clinic.

Oh really? Was the shadow inside the sac ? He just said don't worry about it at all. So far I've had no bleeding. Hope I won't have Confused

From Googling what the bleeds look like, they're usually dark and outside of the sac. My 'shadow' was light, like the embryo and it was inside the sac. Not sure if that makes a difference !

@garrybubblo could it have been the yolk sac? Xx

feejee · 14/09/2021 23:12

I had a moment at first scan where i thought it was twins. Similar size but no embryo. Sonographer said nothing as they measured it, so i asked the midwife after. For me it turned out to be a cyst. Confirmation of my suspected PCOS. By the 20 week scan it had gone.

garrybubblo · 14/09/2021 23:35

@Cheekymonkey3112 maybe !! Surely the sonographer would have known that though ???

May have been a twin that stopped growing already. May be a clot or a bleed. Doesn't sound like anything to worry about.

It wouldn't be a viable twin as it would have been the same size.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 14/09/2021 23:52

I had this , it was a haematoma .

I had to be very very careful .

Why wouldn't the sonographer have said to be careful? Confused

I don't think it's that. It wasn't dark. It was the same colour as the baby and inside the sac. What you're talking about is outside and dark in colour in an ultrasound.

If you are worried, OP, please ask your GP for a referral to an early pregnancy clinic - they'll be able to give you proper advice. We can only guess and tell you about our varied experiences.

Oh did you ? I'm sorry to hear that.

This is my pic. I haven't been back for a scan, but plan to in a couple of weeks.
