False positive?

Hi everybody,

I’m on the Depo Provera injection and have been for around a year and a half. I’ve had no periods for a while now and so far all seems to well. I had my injection a little late last, around 1/2 weeks however the nurse said I’d be fine and had no issue with giving me the injection. I’m due for it tomorrow and today I’ve had a positive pregnancy test. It’s been 12 weeks or just over since I had my last injection. I took some more after (all negative) however the first one came up positive straight away. I’ve read on average it can take around 10 months to conceive after completely stopping the injection. So I can’t see it being possible I’d be pregnant? What’s even worse is if I was I’d have no idea how far along I was.

I have felt a bit crappy recently but I’ve had a urine infection and antibiotics which made me feel a bit sicky. I’ve also had my dose of Mirtazapine (anti-depressant) upped. I am not prepared for another child at the moment as I have a two and a half year old which is my main focus. I’ll try and post the test below. It was a 3 pack, cheap only £1.

Did you use the same urine for the negative tests?

Targaryen18 · 12/09/2021 15:35

@lawandgin it was a different sample to the positive but it was only a few minutes apart. When I saw the positive I did another test

@Targaryen18 surely the second sample would have been too dilute? You need to test again tomorrow with FMU.

I would go to a doctor and get them to do a pregnancy test and get some advice before you get another depo shot.

False positives are rare so it's unlikely but possible. If you retested but not with first morning wee then the sample was likely too diluted to pick up a positive result. That's because the pregnancy hormones it detects is very low in early pregnancy but accumulates overnight so first morning wee can detect it. I think you need to retest tomorrow morning but get yourself a decent pregnancy test first: be aware the digital ones are less sensitive so can give false negatives in early pregnancy. A first response test would be good as they are very sensitive. Good luck.
