Cyst found at 13 week scan

At my scan they found a cyst on my ovary. It made sense as I've been having sharp pains I assumed were pregnancy related (even though this is my 3rd and I didn't recognize the pains I just assumed every pregnancy is different and rode with it). I'm really worried even though they said they're not worried. Should I be requesting a scan earlier than 20 weeks to check it's not growing? They said they'll check it at 20 weeks and hope it's not growing and when I asked why it matters if it grows and what problems it could cause I don't really feel like I got a proper answer, I was just told "oh you'll be referred to see a gynecologist" and that was it..
I'm worried it'll turn out to be cancer or I'll need it removed etc.. they didn't do much to settle my mind so that's what makes me think the worst.
I have been reading alot into it and aparently most of them dissolve by 12 weeks but obviously that's not the case as. 13 weeks and 2 days. (Although according to first day of last period I should be 14 weeks today).
What would you do if you were in this position?

I had a cyst at my (private) 8 week scan. It was still there at 13 weeks but completely gone at 20 weeks. They are very common OP and I really wouldn't worry about it if they haven't commented on it being abnormal. They will see this all the time. You could always get a private scan in a few weeks to check it's getting smaller if you want to put your mind at rest.

Hi there @Bella134 I had a cyst at 11 weeks which went at around 14 weeks. It usually just dissolves away

Hey I had a scan at 7+1 and she said I had a cyst on my left ovary and not to worry. I am currently 8+4 now and have a midwife appointment on wednesday so I will ask what she says. I'm hoping it's nothing to worry about aswell!

With my 3rd pregnancy they found a cyst the size of a tennis ball on my ovary. I was devastated thinking all sorts would go wrong.

By the 20 week scan it had gone back to normal size, no further action required and the baby is now a manic 18 month old.

I had a cyst at my 7 week scan. They said to mention it at my nhs scans (this one was private) I went to my 12 week scan and it was gone. They will just monitor it through pregnancy.

I entirely understand what you are feeling and thinking right now. Mine was after 3 miscarriages too so of course it was added drama I just didn't need. I was a wreck.
I know it's easy to say don't panic but just focus on being as healthy as you can, not just physically but mentally, then you'll know the facts at the 20 week scan.

Just to relate I had a cyst at my 12 week scan, they said to re check it at 20 weeks, scared the he'll outta me, but it had dissappeard completely by 20 weeks, said its common, my DS2 is now 3 months old

There is no communication between gynaecology and maternity unfortunately. Both will pass the buck IME.

Did they say what sort of cyst it is? It may well be the corpus luteum - which is supposed to be there. More info here: www.verywellfamily.com/corpus-luteal-cyst-in-pregnancy-2758590

Thanks all. Still don't know anything yet and still getting sharp pains in my pelvic area. But hopeful that this doesn't mean anything!

At one of my early scans i was told i had a cyst i had sharp pains like yourself but it had shrunk to normal size by 12 weeks. They told me that everyone gets it the result of not having a period and having a pregnancy or something along those lines. I was really alarmed like yourself but i think it is fairly normal

I had a cyst found at my 12 week scan, it was about 20cm big. It was there my entire pregnant and didn’t cause any problems at all. I had it removed about 9 months after I gave birth. Hope that helps!

Bella134 · 04/10/2021 21:02

Did you have to have anything else removed or just the cyst?

I had this with DS1. It stayed there and grew and it stopped DS1 dropping into place for delivery. They were inducing me and nothing was happening. I said, "could it be my cyst..?" They were all, "What cyst?" I said, "The one picked up on my scan, it's in the notes.."

It worked out brilliantly for me, to be honest, as I was terrified of natural childbirth. They did a C-section to deliver DS1 and then removed the cyst.

randomome · 04/10/2021 21:23

I had one found on an early scan and it disappeared. I believe they're quite common - hormones I assume.

Tams1234 · 04/10/2021 22:39

I just had the cyst removed. They did say as it was so large there was a possibility of it damaging the ovary but it was fine when they did the op so just took the cyst out.

Bella134 · 16/10/2021 00:36

Thanks so much everyone! Got my next scan in 2 weeks time so not long and I'll know where I stand with the cyst! Xx

I had three orange sized cysts found at 8w. I can’t remember exactly when they disappeared but they were there at 14w, completely gone at 20.
