Just got pink discharge with flecks of red at 35 weeks at 2am?

I just woke up and went to the loo and when I wiped had a bit of pink and some flecks of red in the discharge… I have had quite a lot of discharge throughout the pregnancy and during the day earlier today I noticed a lot but I don’t think it was my waters or anything it just looked like the usual creamy stuff.

I called the delivery suite (through the triage number) and it took ages to get through because they said they are dealing with an emergency there right now.

When I got through the midwife said it’s nothing to worry about and to call back if it’s red or heavier. I said well it does have a bit of red in it. She was like that’s still fine, is baby moving? He has done a few movements since I woke up so I said yes. She was like just monitor it.

I’m worried about going into preterm labour and also about infections if my cervix is dilating. Please could anyone provide any reassurance as to what might be happening to me right now? This is my first baby so I’m scared and don’t think I’ll sleep now! Thanks

Could it be the mucus plug? If it is, it’s not necessarily a worry but try to get hold of the midwife again in the morning just to put your mind at ease.

I know when you’re at the end stages of pregnancy you just don’t know what’s normal and what’s not so have some Flowers. Hopefully you got back to sleep and it’s all settled down by the morning.

Sounds like mucus plug... Maybe labour is on its way!
Hope you are OK. I bet you can't sleep now. Maybe speak to your midwife in the morning to touch base?

It will be bits of mucus plug. Mine had flecks of red. It was coming out for about 2 weeks before I actually went into labour.

Cafeaulait27 · 10/09/2021 06:48

Ok thanks everyone… I don’t really want to have him at 35 weeks, as he’ll be premature 😞 so hoping like some of you have said that he’ll at least hang on until I’m full term.

Today it seems to have gone back to my normal discharge, and baby is still moving normally, so I guess everything is ok?

It was just the tiniest flecks of red/pink when I wiped last night, so maybe it’s just my cervix getting ready?

So hard not for worry all the time!

How are you feeling now? Has it stopped now?

Rosesareyellow · 11/09/2021 14:58

Mucus plug probably - I lost mine at 37 weeks a week before I actually went into labour just full term by two hours. Losing the plug doesn’t mean labour is imminent.

Cafeaulait27 · 11/09/2021 16:35

Hi @Rosesareyellow @dreamygirl25 thank you for checking in.

Well I’m still getting blobs of pink discharge, so I guess it must be the mucus plug!

Does this mean I’m going to go into labour early? I have a c section booked for beginning of October but I guess it may be happening earlier now?!?!

You should call triage and ask their advice on whether you should be seen x

dreamygirl25 · 11/09/2021 18:47

Agree with above poster. Tell them you are getting a lot of pink discharge. When do you see your midwife enxt?

Thefaceofboe · 11/09/2021 19:41

Any news? Try not to get carried away. I had pink discharge and blood in my mucus plug at 32 weeks but they examined me and my cervix was still closed and all was okay x

emeraldcity2000 · 11/09/2021 20:18

Also to reassure you, I delivered dd1 at 35 weeks with no issues. Not even an extended stay. Hopefully you have a few weeks to go anyway but just in case x

CatOfTheLand · 11/09/2021 20:34

Your mucus plug can come out and grow back, so I wouldn't worry too much. But if you feel like something is wrong go with your gut and see a midwife ASAP

Cafeaulait27 · 11/09/2021 20:38

Thanks everyone, just been for dinner at a restaurant and came back and not had any more discharge for the moment. We’re actually away in a hotel about 2 hours from home tonight which isn’t ideal! Going home tomorrow though. I’m not getting any cramping and baby is moving around as normal.

When I called triage on Thursday (at 2am) they were very much like - if it gets heavier or you’re having contractions to call them back, but otherwise it’s just what happens as you get to full term (that’s what she said anyway…) I kept saying so are you sure it’s ok? I think she thought I was crackers…

I’m not sure whether to call them again or just leave it? Xx

Always, always call if you're worried. If they dismiss you and you're still worried, call again. There's no shame in it and they'd rather you did or didn't.

Just called triage again. Again they didn’t seem worried, they just said that they wouldn’t have me come in unless I was in pain or was having lots of red blood. I asked if it means I’m going to go into early labour and she was like not necessarily.

I then said I’m quite scared, if I go into early labour will they still do my c section as I don’t want to have to do a natural birth as I’m scared of it, she was like well that all depends on how dilated you are when you come in.

She was then like ‘this is a number for urgent calls so you should really be asking these questions to your community midwife not me’ I was like ok thanks for being so understanding…? think she thinks I’m a time waster!!

My friend had the same for 4 weeks and was told it was just the mucus plug x
Her little boy only came one week early x

Cafeaulait27 · 11/09/2021 21:57

@santabetterwashhishands thank you! Will cross my legs haha 🙈

Hmm, just to give the other end of the scale of possibilities-this happened to me at 36 weeks and baby came within 8 hours.

Blossomandbee · 11/09/2021 22:08

I had this at 37 weeks (was given the same advice as you) and baby didn't arrive until 41 weeks.
It could mean labour will start soon, or it could be nothing. Just keep an eye on it and for signs of labour and babies movement.

Cafeaulait27 · 11/09/2021 22:45

Thank you @Sleepinghyena was all ok with your labour and the baby?

@Blossomandbee thank you

Good to hear both sides. Will just have to wait and see…

Baby seems happy and I’m not getting any pains other than from the usual jabs of feet and hands into my sides and bladder so hopefully he’s going to stay in there a bit longer 🤞

@Cafeaulait27 . Baby was born at 36 +6. Labour was 5.5 hours - quick for a firstborn.
Baby was small for dates (4lb 15) But in terms of the mucous plug being followed by onset of labour- it made no difference at all. Good luck with your baby x

Cafeaulait27 · 12/09/2021 02:52

@Sleepinghyena wow! Thank you so much for sharing. Will keep you all updated xxx
