Second AstraZeneca Covid vaccine whilst pregnant

Hi all
Sorry for another Covid vaccine thread but most of the information I’ve read seems to be on the Pfizer vaccine.

I am over 40 and had my first Az vaccine before starting my latest round of ivf. I’m now 11 weeks pregnant and worrying whether to have my second dose. If I’d had Pfizer as a first dose I would have felt there was enough information to safely decide to have the vaccine but I’m in a bit of a dilemma. The information sheet the midwife gave me advised not to mix doses. I have a history of miscarriage and am unsure how to proceed. Has anyone else faced this dilemma and what did you decide? TIA

Hi OP, I was in a slightly similar situation as I had my first AZ vaccine in April before I was pregnant, then had a dilemma as to whether to get my second one (fell pregnant in early May). At the time there was absolutely no data regarding safety of AZ vaccine in pregnancy as very few pregnant women had received it, so it was a very tough decision for me. Like you, I felt that if I'd had the Pfizer I would not have worried about the second jab. In the end and reading all the scientific material I could get my hands on, I decided the risks of getting COVID outweighed the risk of the vaccine and I got my second AZ jab at 10 weeks pregnant. I am now 18 weeks and have had no adverse effects whatsoever and I feel much safer being double jabbed. Of course, the decision is totally up to you and I understand your concern. My partner is a teacher and my DD attends nursery so for me, the risk of getting COVID seemed high.

Yep. I had my second at 10 weeks. The tech used in AZ is decades old, it was just tweaked for CV19. That made me feel better.

Thanks for the replies both, it’s helpful to hear what other people have done.

Like a PP said it's just an old vaccine that they modified for this strain, so I would do it.

I asked my doctor because I was worried too, but he said it's okay.

I had my first dose of AZ the week before finding out I was pregnant and my second dose when I was about 12 weeks. I’m now 34 weeks pregnant with a very healthy baby and my 6 year old has Covid - I have not, which in my mind proves it’s somewhat effective (she has been literally sneezing and coughing around me since last week!). I’m really shocked to have tested negative while she’s so poorly.

Just to add- I was lucky enough to be able to chat through the decision with my consultant as I was under her for recurrent miscarriage, her view was that the risk of getting Covid especially in the third trimester far outweighed any potential side effects.

Thanks for posting all, the advice has been really useful. I have decided to have my second AZ vaccine after my 20 week scan / in my second trimester in November. I’m currently WFH as is DP and we don’t have other DC so felt this wait was acceptable. There will be a bit of a gap between my doses but I’ll just have to hope that isn’t a concern.
