Sinusitis in pregnancy

I recently found out that I'm pregnant with DC2 (still very early, 6+5) and I've had the worst sinusitis for the past week!

I remember having it much later in pregnancy with DD and it was nowhere near as painful.

Does anyone have any tips on how to relieve the pain?

Paracetamol doesn't really do anything and I would usually take Sudafed (when not pregnant) which helps massively! I've tried the warm flannel on my face, which relieves it for about 5 mins! Short of constantly sitting in the bathroom with a hot shower running for the steam to help, I'm at a loss!

4head sticks are great and /or deep freeze gel has a similar effect. You can also use the salt water nose sprays. Hope you feel better soon x

Ah, thank you! Why have I never thought of these before?!

Hi op. I am 6+2. Sinuses have started to give me trouble again. I had it much later In pregnancy last time and ended up needing to go off work and get antibiotics.

Sinus rinse is amazing!! Two days of using this and mine is gone. (For now. Hope it stays gone). It is hard to get used to at first but now I love using it. The warm water is so soothing and calms inflammation In the sinuses as well as unblocking them.

I had such bad sinusitis last time I was pregnant - got it when I was about 7 months pregnant - ended up going to a and e and they have me antibiotics which cleared it up.

Saline spray or you can use steroid nasal spray.

Jade roller cooled in the fridge helps mine massively. Not pregnant mind you lol but it’s a drug free tip

My first pregnancy this was awful. I avoided sudafed and really suffered.
8 paracetamol a day, nose sprays, antibiotics time off work, ct scan - eventually I went for acupuncture and it cleared it!

Second pregnancy, went to boots as soon as it came. They told me I could have one type of sinus tablet (cant remember which one) and even taking one of those gave me so.much relief and meant I could manage the pain with paracetamol.

MsSquiz · 06/09/2021 20:06

I was hoping to avoid the spray/rinse things because I absolute hate anything going up my nose! But I might have to give them a try. I'll also pop into boots to see what the recommend - I think I'd just written off meds because I can't have Sudafed!

I might also invest in a jade roller! I'm happy to try anything so I don't have this until I give birth!

I've been suffering too. I've been sniffing Vicks VapoRub which has helped, and been applying a little when sniffing isn't working.

The official guidance from Olbas Oil is no, so other than Vicks I didn't know what to do.

Otrivin is the only thing that works. Although it says “not recommended” in pregnancy my consultant (who is the head master of maternity hospital) said it’s ok to use it as long as you don’t abuse it. I used it every evening before sleep as there was no way I would be able to sleep. I used it till about week 30. Then the blocked nose just miraculously went away on its own

MsSquiz · 07/09/2021 15:38

Oddly, last night I didn't have the humidifier on and I slept really well and today I've been the clearest I've been for over a week!

Keeping everything crossed I'm over the worst, but knowing my luck, it will be back with a vengeance tomorrow as I'm out tomorrow night!

@MsSquiz have a look at reflexology points, I believe they are on the underneath of your toes and if you press/massage them it can give some relief (it works a bit for me), other than that I had to use sterimar nasal spray (was recommended by the pharmacist when I waddled in feeling sorry for myself)

I really struggled with sinusitis when I was pregnant with DS1. Had it repeatedly and frequently! Get a neti pot on Amazon and do weekly sinus rinses, run the shower so it's boiling and sit in the bathroom with the steam. 4 head sticks and sinus inhalers!
