Baby measuring big

Hi all!

Just after some advise and/or similar stories.

I had my 28 week appointment today (I'm actually 28+4) and she referred me for a growth scan as I was measuring quite small at 26cm so under the 10th centile.. thankfully there was a cancellation the same day and managed to get in an hour later.

At end of the growth scan the sonographer had said I'm actually measuring big on the 90th centile and baby is weighing 3lb6.

Unfortunately the ADU closed at 7:30 so I can't be seen until tomorrow morning to discuss a 'plan' or to discuss the full results of the scan so I've come away with no information really.

My urine is clear and my bloods were taken for a glucose test, the sonographer was happy at the measurements she took and didn't seem concerned nor did she mention that anything was wrong just that she's a little bigger.. my husband is a big stocky guy at 6ft6 so I never expected a small baby! Xx

I had a growth scan 3 days before DD2 was born. They told me she was almost 8lbs. She came out 5lbs 13. I'd take it with a pinch of salt tbh

My baby has been measuring between 90th & 97th centile the entire time with similar estimated weight to you at 28 weeks.

Hasn't changed my pregnancy at all so far. No GD or anything to explain it. I keep asking about his size at MW appointment but get told still within normal range so no need to consider c-section etc for size.

Just keep discussing it with them- they may want more growth scans, they may not.

Some people just have bigger babies!

90th centile is not usually concerning to them unless you have a very small frame. They may offer further scans to see if baby stays along the same line or goes further up on the growth charts.

I've had a lot of big babies and they only seem worried and plan intervention when they go above the 97th centile. Our current newborn (baby 6) was average at 20wk, 97th centile at 31+6 (5lb 4oz), jumped above 97th at 35+6 (7lb 12oz), born at 38+6 weighing 10lb 15oz and straight in to 0-3mth clothes. We planned an elcs at 39wk due to previous cs with our twins but I went in to labour a day early so had a semi-elective, I had started to get rupture so lost a lot of blood. Her brother (our 2nd) was a similar size (10lb 12oz @ 40+5) and I had an unassisted vaginal birth with him, 14mins of pushing so not too bad.

Oh and I had GTT tests which were within normal ranges, I just grow them big.

Thanks for all your comments!

Returned this morning and they've just booked me in for another growth scan for 3 weeks time then if she's still measuring big I'll have a conversation with the doctors.. not entirely sure what for but we'll see!

As others have said take it with a pinch of salt. I was measuring big with DS2 and my midwife kept referring to DS2 as a big baby and she actually ended up making me really nervous for the birth. Turns out DS2 weighed 7lb 11oz, which was smaller than DS1 who never measured big and he was 7lb 13oz.

When it comes to sizing i totally ignore what they say whether its a bump measurement or a guess from the scans, this pregnancy and my last i had to have many additional scans to check growth because turns out the 7-8lb baby they kept talking about with my 1st was actually less than 5lbs at birth at 38 weeks. Couldve prevented the issues that led to my emergency section if they were even close to accurate and all the medical staff were aware.

You may have a big baby, you may have a normal sized baby or a tiny one, nobody really knows and i know youll be worrying about it because thats what we naturally do as mums but if i were you, id put it to the back of my mind and just enjoy the extra times you get to see baby Smile
