Weird pain and worrying

I'm very early stages with second baby. I think about 5 and a half weeks.

I'm on high alert for everything. Today I've had a few sharp twinges on my left hand side and a bit of back ache. I had a friend who had an ectopic pregnancy and I keep thinking that pain on one side could be due to that.

I'm so much more anxious with this pregnancy. More so than with my first as I'm more aware of all the things that can go wrong this time :(

When I should I worry about pain and twinges? I'm not due to see my midwife until late September.

aw im sure it could be just your body stretching perhaps?

if you are concerned call your midwife and im sure she will be happy to help x

If it helps, I had one sided pain and twinges with both my “normal” and my ectopic pregnancies. If you are at all worried, call your GP… my ectopic ruptured before I was far enough pregnant to be registered with the midwife, so I struggled to get referred to EPU!

@SillyBry oh really? I'm guessing the pain and symptoms of that were pretty severe?

Mine have mostly been occasional twinges. I'm just overthinking and super anxious about everything. I'm also really tired and emotional today so I think it's just getting on top of me a bit.

@teaandcrumpets35 it’s so hard not knowing what is going on in there!
So with my ectopic, I had light bleeding (more than spotting) and a general stomach pain that came more from one side than the other at about 5 weeks pregnant. I was seen by an out of hours dr who said it was a kidney infection and gave me antibiotics. Said if I carried on bleeding or had pain after 4 days to call my GP. I did, so I did. I had an over the phone appt where she told me it was most likely a miscarriage. The pain and bleeding would get worse before it got better. But if I still had issues in 10 days, I would need an urgent referral to EPU. (I did… and when I got to EPU, they discovered my stomach was full of blood and I had a ruptured “growth” on my Fallopian tube. (Didn’t even call it a baby 😢)
The pain was hard to describe - I never had shoulder pain and I didn’t find it especially one sided… but I felt horrendously bloated the whole time. Walking felt quite concussive as I had a lot of rectal pressure/feeling like I just needed a big poo!! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣 My whole stomach felt tender and, especially towards the end, it felt “full”. I just felt like my organs were all squashed together.

The next time around, I had one sided twinges, aches and pains… but on the side with no Fallopian tube, so I at least knew it wasn’t there… I would say they were twinges when I stood up or a cramp type pain that would go again, whereas the ectopic I constantly felt sore. I had an ectopic rule out scan at 6 weeks this time and they said I had a cyst on my ovary, where I’d ovulated. Apparently they are super common and can cause aches and pains… but they don’t usually get picked up as 9/10 they have dissolved by the 12 week scan.

My biggest message is trust your instinct… I listened to everyone’s timelines and didn’t want to cause a fuss or be dramatic/waste precious NHS time. Whereas actually, I should’ve fought harder to be seen. If you are really concerned, right your corner to be seen!

Good luck - I am sure it’s just stretching and growing pains 😘

@SillyBry thank you so much for replying in such detail. You've put my mind at ease as my symptoms are not like what you experienced with your ectopic (I'm sorry you had to go through all of that). I really think I'm just overthinking and analysing every little twinge and cramp. I will keep an eye on everything and I may have booked an early scan at 8 weeks to check all is ok Blush because I will drive my dp crazy if I have to wait much longer lol.

Thank you again

Good luck… early pregnancy is so hard as you literally have no idea what’s going on in there!
This time round, I just told myself what would be, would be. And I repeated that, a lot! 😉
Keep busy, try not to worry too much… but trust your gut. If you feel something is really wrong, shout loudly!
I hope all goes well for you xx
