Hot baths in pregnancy very worried

Hi all,

I'm only 7 weeks pregnant. This baby took me a long time to concieve so I'm very anxious that all goes well but I made such a mistake.

Ive had a couple of hot baths this weekend, I never knew your not meant to in early pregnancy. I am now worrying like mad.

Risks of miscarriage but also the baby not developing properly because of overheating is coming up a lotSad

Will I have harmed my baby? I'm so worried.
I also went in a steam room before I knew I was pregnant, it wasn't very hot though and was for about 5 minutes.

I'm very anxious Sad

Really truly, you’ll be fine.

Pregnant women have been having hot baths for millennia 😀

Congratulations!

Lovebug06 · 30/08/2021 19:18

@Zarene that makes me feel a bit better.
I googled, which I know will always say the worst, and it said all sorts of awful stuff and I've been so worried!

I think the hot bath warning is becuae when you are pregnant you are at more risk of fainting and hot baths increase the chances of this. Please don't worry. I was a few weeks pregnant, didn't know, and I was on a bouncy castle and having a few drinks which you also shouldn't do. I'm now 17 weeks so far so good.
Dr Google try and avoid look on NHS website.

mooloop · 30/08/2021 19:23

I carried on having hot baths and I'm 31 weeks now Smile congratulations on your pregnancy!

334bu · 30/08/2021 19:28

Most women of my generation weren't even sure if they were pregnant at 7weeks and yet our babies all survived the hot baths and coffee etc. Don't worry and congratulations.

loafcake · 30/08/2021 19:29

Hot baths are okay because they don't get any hotter, you body does have a chance at cooling down. (As long as it doesn't turn your skin too red I believe).
That's why spas and hot tubs aren't recommended, because they keep a constant hot temperature.

Enjoy your hot baths!

Lindy2 · 30/08/2021 19:30

Your internal body temperature isn't going to change much even in a hot bath. Also, women can still get a temperature from having an illness when pregnant and their babies are fine.

I think it's more of a risk that it could cause you to feel a bit woozy as sometimes being pregnant is enough to cause dizziness and getting out of a hot bath could intensify that.

I'm sure baby is absolutely fine. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Bancha · 30/08/2021 19:39

I’ve read that the risk about hot baths is that if your core temperature goes above 39C there is a risk of abnormalities in the first trimester. 39C is a full blown fever! I would be very surprised if your baths were that hot!

I think the hot bath advice is so unhelpful- it’s just what you need when you’re pregnant. It’s also not universal and plenty of countries don’t advise against hot baths. For what it’s worth, I’m pregnant and I am still having baths. In fact, I’m in the bath right now. I’m sure your baby is fine. Congratulations!

Spyro1234 · 30/08/2021 19:41

Chill out, it'll be fine, I did before I realised I was pregnant. Try not to worry so much!

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/08/2021 19:46

Most of us on here aren’t medics so can’t give you the most up to date advice, talk to your midwife who can ease your mind.

Anecdotally, lying in very warm/bordering on hot baths was the only thing that soothed first my nausea and then my back and hip pain throughout two healthy pregnancies.

Congratulations Smile

Lovebug06 · 30/08/2021 20:50

Thankyou everyone that's made me feel much better Smile

Don’t worry your baby will be completely fine :)
I love my baths, I find it helps to relax so I have baths quite regularly which are normal heat. My baby is all fine and developing normally. I’m 36 weeks.

ker89 · 30/08/2021 20:55

A good tip I found was to buy a baby bath thermometer so you can keep an eye on what temp your bath is! Might help put your mind at ease x

mumwon · 30/08/2021 21:07

Damn & no one told Ancient Roman women that they couldn't go to the hot baths ... Grin
Op in the bad old days I had hot baths when I was pregnant with each of mine - I think that whilst avoiding some of these things that they tell you about (ie caffeine tea/coffee, alcohol, hot baths etc) everyday practical living means that you wont (as pp says) know your pregnant in the early days - & in past times women had babies doing these things without issue
drinking frequent excess alcohol & smoking was always a risk

Kihanxxxx · 30/08/2021 21:35

A hot bath is fine. Don't worry nothing will happen stop worrying

alltheeights · 30/08/2021 21:53

I still have hot baths and use the hot tub, both a tad cooler than I usually had but I use to have it to the point of feeling dizzy pre pregnancy.

My hot tub is usually set at 28 and when I first started using the tub I took my temperature every 10 minutes just to double check my body temperature didn't rise (since the water was cooler than my body temperature I didn't really need to but the stories scared me 😂)

If you like your bath scolding hot, maybe try a tad cooler or check your temp just to make sure but your body is probably use to that temperature of bath anyway.

jb1905 · 30/08/2021 21:56

I had this panic around the same time as you and mourned my baths for a couple of days (my favourite thing to relax!). Then I did some research in more reliable places and I go by the rules that as long as I'm not sweating or turning my skin red then it's ok. I keep a window open and bottle of water with me too.

I'm pretty sure in some countries like the Scandinavian ones, they spend their whole lives and pregnancies in hot saunas so I'm not too worried now!

GlamGiraffe · 30/08/2021 22:03

Ive never heard of this. Ive had two vety high risk pregnancies and always have a very hot bath every day. I never knew about it. Both my children were fine (risk was due to a pre existing health issue i have only). I cant imagine it eill cause you any problems. Stress and worry are far worse for you. Youll be fine . Relax.

northernlola · 30/08/2021 22:26

My first pregnancy (now a healthy 3 year old!) I got pregnant in December and it was a really cold winter.. in the Jan and Feb I had loads of lovely baths! I hated being cold, they were exactly what I needed. You'll be fine!

Nervousdave · 30/08/2021 23:22

As pp has said, it's more a risk that your blood pressure will drop and you'll faint.

I am a lover of hot baths, and in my last pregnancy (2019) asked the midwife. As long as you can get in "in one go" - meaning it's not so hot that you have to slowly ease yourself into it, you should be fine.

Enjoy the baths!

VegMam · 31/08/2021 10:35

I know in other cultures hot baths are deemed acceptable during pregnancy, eg in Japan pregnant women still go to the onsen which can be very warm!

Lovebug06 · 31/08/2021 18:57

Thanks everyone,
