mmc at 12 week scan but no sign of miscarrying?!!

Hi, I'm really worried at had dating scan and was told twins had stopped growing at 8+2, no heartbeat from either baby. Another lady came in to confirm the sonographers findings which she did. However I am 12+5 weeks pregnant today, still no sign of miscarriage at all and can still feel my uterus stretching everyday. I am booked in for an erpc on weds this week and terrified they have got it wrong. I've already had an mmc last year but started having bleeding at 12 weeks day before scan.

The hospital don't offer a 2nd scan.

The nurse told me mmc's happen because the body tries to stay pregnant until the placenta takes over at 12 weeks, so surely now i'm 12+5 my body should know the pregnancy wasn't viable and be showing signs of miscarriage??

Has anyone else had mmc at 12 week scan and taken a while for the miscarriage to happen??

So worried :(

I'm so sorry your going through this but I did have a missed miscarriage this time last year and I found out at my 12 week scan but my baby was gone since 5 weeks. I was scanned and told it would be a viable pregnancy. A day after the scan my body did show sings of miscarriage I was spotting and had really bad cramps but I had an appointment for a week later and it just showed that the sac had fallen down to the bottom of my womb. I then started on the tablets to help bring things on but it took a full week untill I passed the sac and then I went through another day of tablets for retaining tissue had another follow up appointment and still had some left so I had to go for a D&C in the end

@AmySH1267 thanks, and i'm sorry for your loss too. Your miscarriage was similar to the one i had last year, started to bleed at 12 weeks, then naturally but didn't complete, had the tablets then had an erpc. This is why i am worried though as i have had no signs of miscarriage at all, no bleeding or cramping or anything and i'm 13 weeks on weds :/

Have you got a follow up appointment to go through your options?

moomin11 · 30/08/2021 12:04

So sorry you're going through this. I was booked in for an erpc but had a very heavy bleed the day before, they scanned me to check before the procedure - I would speak to the hospital and ask for a scan beforehand just to put your mind at ease xx

TakeMeAway82 · 30/08/2021 12:21

@moomin11 i'm sorry to hear that moom, that's really good advice, thank you i will ask if they will scan me before i go in :)

@amysh1267 no, they called me later that afternoon and i chose to have erpc as didn't want to go through what i did last year. so no proper follow up appt.

Yeah I don't blame you if I was in that situation again I'd go straight for a D&C cuz it's over with on the one day and you don't have this long drawn out waiting time. I think that's the worst and the pain from the tablets is just the worst pain ever.

Garman · 30/08/2021 13:23

Unfortunately that's why it's called a missed or silent miscarriage, there are no symptoms like in a standard/obvious miscarriage.

TakeMeAway82 · 30/08/2021 13:49

@garman not initially but you do eventually miscarry, which is what i was asking, how long 'after' 12 week scan did it take to miscarry

But you don't always, that's why people have medical intervention to kick-start it, it can go on a long time otherwise and you might only realise when sepsis/infection kicks in if starts to break down.

TakeMeAway82 · 30/08/2021 16:56

@garman I guess that goes to show how different everyone's experience is. My mmc last year I waited to miscarry naturally, ended up with infection, had antibiotics and had erpc in end, however i did have bleeding and a lot of pain even though it didn't complete fully. For whatever reason this time my body just isn't registering both babies have gone. I'm still going to ask for another scan for my piece of mind though

Hi my circumstances were a bit different to yours but I'm sure that a nurse told me they always scan before a d&c procedure as a lot could of changed in those weeks. I'm so sorry this has been such a long drawn out process for you. In answer to your original question I think my baby's heart stopped around 9 weeks and I eventually miscarried about 13 weeks (MMC discovered at 12 week scan). But I did have spotting a mild cramps the week in-between so they were hopeful it was imminent. Wishing you all the best at this difficult time Flowers

TakeMeAway82 · 30/08/2021 18:24

@hopefulbride18 thank you so much for sharing your experience with me, I feel reassured that I can get a scan before the go ahead with the op.

I've had 2 MMC before and the first time the baby had stopped growing at 10 weeks, discovered in the 12 week scan. I decided to wait and let things happen naturally. Well, it took 5 months! I'd gone back to the doctors several times concerned that nothing was happening etc and kept getting told that the body can reabsorb the tissues and stuff. Eventually I started having labour cramps randomly at home and it was just getting to the point I needed an ambulance and then I passed a huge organ like mass. When I went to the doctors the next day they just shrugged like "yeah that sounds normal". The next time I had a MMC I requested an ERPC ASAP!
