Is pregnancy always calculated by the date of the last period?

My periods have been all over the place since I had my implant taken out in February this year. I've only had 3 since then.

The first date of my last period was 12th July, I tested on 21st august and was negative but tested this morning and got a blazing positive.

Does that make me 6 week 5 days?

Initially doctors go by this yes, but this is because most women don't know when they ovulated in a month. Some can be early, others late. You usually ovulate somewhere between day 10 to 18 from the first day of your last period. Then you might implant a little late as well.
Best off going from the date of your last period for now and getting booked in for either bloods to measure your HCG levels, or a scan.
Oh and the negative test could be a load of things too. Some tests aren't as sensitive as others. The time of day you took the test, or whether you drank a load of liquid beforehand. (Best time to take one is first thing in the morning to allow for a higher concentration of HCG in your pee).

But anyway Congratulations! X

Thanks, it was the same test brand taken with my first morning pee.

I've booked in with my midwife and just waiting for an appointment and I'm very tempted for an early reassurance scan due to a previous MC

For now though i know it's just a waiting game, thanks again

Yep you'll be 6 weeks, give or take a couple of days depending on cycle lengths but understand yours have been all over the place.
Pp has explained it all perfectly!
I just wanted to add if you are going for a scan 7/8 weeks minimum is what I would advise.
Congrats!!

Congratulations! Only up until you have a scan. Then it will always go off the scan dates. The date of 12th July will give them something to go off though to book your initial appointments.

I had a previous pregnancy years ago and the nurse that was scheduling the booking appointments was SO angry with me when I said I genuinely had no idea when my last period was Hmm I’m sure she was a one-off though!

Thanks all - yes if we decided to go for a scan it won't be for another 2 weeks to take us closer to 9 but we are unsure if we are going to go for one yet.

I get so confused with this!

I understand the whole period calculations. But then they scan you and go off that instead...

Does actual conception date not matter? I know unless ivf you can't know, but i believe I've been made a week further along than i am from scan.

Lmp 2nd or 3rd June. Only day of sex 12th june. Made me 12 weeks on 25th August but at scan on 25th August they said 12+6. How can i be more pregnant when i hadn't had sex until 12th june??

So confused!

@HyphenCobra LMP is generally based off of you have a 28 day cycle.
You may have ovulated afew days later than you thought or implanted.

curcurbita · 28/08/2021 10:41

@HyphenCobra if you think you conceived on 12th June or thereabouts you'd be 13 weeks by those dates today. So by your dates you'd have been 12+4 on the 25th I think? Unless I have read your post wrong. So a couple of days ahead on the scan may just mean baby implanted a bit earlier or is slightly bigger than average. You may have ovulated earlier in your cycle than average so the LMP dates aren't accurate in your case.

I think the scan is used as there is so much variation in cycles and it's their best measurement of how developed the baby is and therefore when to schedule other scans and due date etc.
