Should I be worried about this backache and spotting/discharge?

9 weeks pregnant after 2 miscarriages this year. Had an early scan at EPU at 7 weeks after a bit of spotting and saw baby with a heartbeat, they also said I had a fibroid in my womb and a small pocket of blood next to the sac but otherwise all looked fine. Was told that I could probably expect more spotting due to the pocket of blood and not to panic, but obviously very difficult not to panic after losses!

So on Sunday I woke up with some mild backache, I initially thought I'd probably slept funny but it persisted all day. Not really sore, just uncomfortable. Monday morning still had the backache and had some very thick brown discharge when I went to the toilet in the morning. Then had a bit of brown/pink tinged spotting when I wiped on and off through the day. Tuesday the backache was much worse and I was struggling to even pick up my 3 year old, still had the same spotting and discharge on and off through the day. Had to take paracetamol before bed as my back had become quite painful. This morning, backache still there and have had more of the really thick brown discharge when I went to the toilet accompanied by pinkish spotting that took more than a few wipes to go.

EPU told me not to worry if it wasn't fresh looking blood but my first miscarriage started with brown spotting so I've not found that advice very helpful and it's so hard not to worry. I've phoned them so many times over the last six months and always end up feeling stupid when they tell me brown is nothing to worry about and to just wait it out. I'm just looking for advice really. Should I just bite the bullet and phone them again? Sad

Definitely phone again. There's no harm and you will put your mind at rest one way or another. Another option would be arrange a private scan. I know this is a stressful time up to the 12 week scan. If there is some blood near the sac it is probably just that coming out and your chances of miscarriage are very low now you've seen a heartbeat. I have had bad back pain throughout my pregnancies. But get it checked out to put your mind at ease.

I hope it's nothing but the combination of backache and spotting you describe is exactly how my miscarriage started. You need to get scanned by the EPU.

(FWIW, I had a similar feeling with my next pregnancy on Christmas Eve and went to EPU to discover everything was fine.)
Either way, you deserve to know and you need to take life very gently until you do.

@leavesthataregreen @Yarqueen I always find I'm left feeling a bit like I'm over reacting whenever I phone them. But have phoned now and just need to wait on a call back. Thank you both, I think I just needed to know I wasn't being daft!

Glad you've phoned op.
I have two experiences with brown discharge and back one.
First one I ended up miscarrying second results in my DS!
I also had a pocket of blood the second time.
Let us know what they sayThanks

Rainbowroadx · 25/08/2021 08:47

@Wilmaa I also had the same with my DS and all was fine but then have had 2 miscarriages. It's the not knowing that's the worst! Thank you, I will ❤

Well I have been told once again that brown blood is old blood and to keep an eye on it. No reassurance when I say that was how my first miscarriage started, just that it's 'very unlikely' and probably down to the pocket of blood. Backache could be a number of things apparently, if I've no cramping then I shouldn't worry. I know they're technically right but when you've experienced all these things before and had a bad outcome it's just so frustrating 😩

@Rainbowroadx
Hate how they brush brown blood of with old blood I have had 4 miscarriages and 3 of them started with brown blood thick like coffee granules and no cramps to go with it. Hope everything turns out well and it's just the pocket of brown blood.

Rainbowroadx · 25/08/2021 12:21

@Babyghirl Me too, it's awful! I never feel listened to when I tell them it's happened before. Thank you, I'm going to see how it goes over the next few days and call them back if no change. Will book a private scan early next week if they're still not interested!
