Any idea how shared maternity leave works?

Hi

We're due our second child

I get 12 weeks full pay but my husbands
Work maternity leave pay is much more generous (6 months)

How does it work if day I take 5 months off ( full pay and holidays etc) and then go back to work full time ( I'm the higher wage earner) and then hubby takes day 3 months off using some of my stat leave. How much will his employers pay him?

I work from home so could
Still breastfeed etc, it's just hubby would be main carer for the last 3 months

Anyone know how it works?

Your DH will need to check with his employer - I believe they don't need to offer more than statutory, even if their maternity leave policy is more generous.

It depends entirely on the employer's pay policy. DH got up to 5 months full pay but he had to take it within 22 weeks of the birth, so he couldn't just take over when I went back at full pay, although he did do that with our first baby.

You can share 12 months of leave in whatever pattern you fancy and I think also the 9 months of statutory pay. Additional pay is entirely in the gift of the employer to set Ts and Cs on.

My partner checked his and it is equal for men and women, except women get an extra month to recover. His is four months full pay, plus two weeks additional. We are planning to take it five months each - most of that for both of us will be full pay

We did something similar to what you are planning because my DH got 6 months full pay compared to 4 months for me.

I did 3 months of maternity leave on full pay and 1 month of accrued leave, the SPL clock transferred to him at the end of 3 months and he took 3 months on full pay too.

This worked for us, because I was working from home/ on summer break for most of the time that he was on leave, so essentially I had 6 months off too.
