I had a growth scan today at the hospital (I'm 28+4)and I was told that the femur length is 3 weeks behind and measuring at 0.3% . While the head is over a week ahead and measuring at 95%. I've been booked in for another growth scan next week and the consultant said they weren't very worried but something about the way the head consultant was brought in and her manner makes me think otherwise. Has anyone had this happen and everything was OK? I'm so upset and besides myself with worry, they've always measured on the small side but this is something else . I haven't even told my partner yet as he is at work and I don't want to upset him , so I'm sat here alone crying .

Hi, sorry, it is scary isn't it. This happened to me, in both my pregnancies. My babies were small but have really long bottom half of legs and smaller femurs... And both totally fine in the end. I was reminded by a senior consultant that growth scans aren't exactly accurate and that growth doesn't happen equally around each scan. At one point mine was 4 weeks behind.
It is positive the consultant came in, they have seen everything and they are being thorough. You can have no growth then a spurt. I had babies under the 5% percentile ( and partner and I are both over 6ft!!!) So, keep going to the regular scans, ride the process and try not to panic..the fact other measurements looking good is positive. I had scans every 2 weeks from 24 weeks due to the issue, very anxiety inducing so I do understand how you feel, and whilst I had small babies they caught up quickly once out and lovely and healthy.

Share with your partner, focus on what you can control. Wishing you all the best.

So don’t panic or fall down the google rabbit hole. Scans can be inaccurate so it’s important to get the follow up (like they recommended) as on scan could be wrong.

Have they mentioned growth restriction to you? I imagine they’ve look at the blood flow to and from the placenta (dopplers) how were they looking? The discrepancy between leg measurement and head for iugr/FGR is called brain sparing, which sounds super scary but it’s a good thing as it ensures the brain is getting the blood flow to develop as it’s the most important thing.

I'm 35 weeks and have been having extra scans since 20 weeks. Babies femur length for me has always been around 3 weeks behind, although they are now 5 weeks behind at my last scan (34 weeks).
Overall he is weighing approx just below the 10th centile,
I've seen fetal medicine and have scans every 2 weeks to keep an eye on growth and blood flow.
It's likely I'll be induced just after 37 weeks but they aren't concerned about It being anything other than just being smaller than average. I'm only 4ft 11 so that's to be expected lol.

Try not to google and talk to your partner xx
