Hi all!

I recently found out that I'm pregnant.

We are so happy and this is my first baby. According to the calculation from my last period I'm 5wks. I contacted my doctor via eConsult and it seems they have no interest in seeing me at all? They have just told me to contact the Midwife which I can't arrange until I'm 7wks apparently? Is this normal? Just feel a little out my depth at the moment as have no idea what to expect

Thanks xx

Hey there

Congratulations. I felt exactly the same when I was told this. With a first pregnancy you just don’t know what to expect and it feels like a long old wait to see the midwife.

It is normal though unfortunately. I found reading pregnancy books quite helpful in those weeks just to feel like I was doing something proactive to learn about what was happening. Helped me to think of questions to ask the midwife too.

I’m in week 15 now and the waits between appointments still feel very long, but that first bit was definitely the hardest!

Thanks @glasspaw it's comforting to know that this is the norm! We didn't expect to get pregnant this fast so I think I'm having a moment of... I have no idea what I'm doing haha! I'll definitely take your advice! I've been reading a lot of online articles too.

Congratulations on your pregnancy ☺️

Congratulations! That sounds completely normal to me. This is the breakdown of the appointments I had when pregnant with DD2 last year.

It feels like an endless wait but it does go much quicker than you expect.

Thanks @BeingATwatItsABingThing (love the username btw 😆) that's really helpful! Every article I've read is contact your GP straight away so was a bit confused. Appreciate you sharing your appointment schedule thanks! Xx

No worries. I went to my GP when pregnant with DD1 but he also told me just to go to the midwife. How can we be expected to know what to do if we’ve never been pregnant before?

Sarah110683 · 23/08/2021 16:35

Hi @nicolelou86
I'm also just over 5 weeks pregnant, and it's my 1st. I've been trying for over 5 years, so it really doesn't feel real. Smile
I've probably done about half a dozen pregnancy tests - every few days just to double check it's true! Hahaha
How do people survive the 1st trimester?!?! - I'm so nervous. The last few weeks have felt like they've taken forever to pass - i found out just before 4 weeks.
Are you managing to keep yourself sane? X

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 23/08/2021 16:37

I’d contact your gp and get the details for the midwife so you can self refer.

In my first pregnancy I booked a gp appointment and they were more than happy to see me. With my second I self referred to my midwifery team as I already had the self referral details. Will be doing it again soon as I’ve just had a positive test but going to wait until a week or so as it’s still very early.

Congratulations btw! Flowers hope you’re ok. I found my first pregnancy very nerve wracking!

physicskate · 23/08/2021 16:41

All a good would say is: congrats. Take folic acid and bit d. They may even say: advice on things to avoid during pregnancy can be found on the nhs website - contact midwives for booking in appt that should take place 8-12 weeks.

Sarah110683 · 23/08/2021 16:46

Also congratulations @nicolelou86 FlowersSmile

nicolelou86 · 23/08/2021 18:08

Aww congratulations @Sarah110683!! That's amazing news!! You must feel so happy especially trying for 5yrs!!

I'm definitely still in the denial stage! Does not feel real at all! When I read back my post earlier I was like what!! I'm pregnant 🤣

I have no idea! I'm terrified I must admit! I had the realisation I have no idea what I'm doing lol! I was really teary one day last week but my partner was amazing and put me at ease.

We were away in Newquay last week so managed to keep myself sane and busy, back to normal this week and work from home so way to much time to think haha! Just going to keep myself busy and continue the gym etc and spend time with friends and family to keep myself sane ☺️
