17 weeks and overdosed on coffee - panicking!

I've basically given up coffee during this pregnancy, but I used to have three strong cups a day of coffee from the cafetiere. Today, I just felt so tired and had so much work to do that I had a large cup of coffee from the cafetiere that my husband made. I did taste that it was REALLY strong when I drank it (like, bizarrely strong -I don't know why he made it like that), but thought I would be fine.

However, now I am absolutely wired. I'm jittery, feel sick, and realised I probably had far more than the 200mg I am allowed. Plus, my body isn't used to it anymore. I'm panicking that I will have harmed the baby or that I am going to miscarry now!

You will not have caused any harm to your baby or yourself - too much coffee will not cause you to miscarry
If you’re worried of course ring your midwife but maybe have some water … just avoid anything else with caffeine todya such as tea, coke etc

You're just not used to it anymore, it's not an overdose. You'll be fine.

Occasional coffee is not going to cause miscarriage. The risk with caffeine is over a long time. They suggest 200mg a day, every day but if you have 600mg one day and none for a week then you're still not over your limit. So 1 cup of coffee will not do you any harm.

I’m mid way through 2nd trimester and drink one or two coffees most mornings from our machine at home (so they’re quite strong) as I just absolutely adore coffee and love my morning cup(s). I told my midwife this, she said it’s only guidance so people don’t go bananas and drink 7 cups a day - everything in moderation and you’ll be fine!

You'll be fine, this was one of the things I properly researched when I was pregnant, because with HG full fat coke was one of the things I could keep down.

Most of it is based on a handful of studies in rats - which actually showed you'd need to consume enough coffee to harm YOU quite badly before it did any damage to the baby.

Then another handful of questionnaire based studies that found a loose link between increased caffeine intake throughout pregnancy and low birthweight. BUT lots of things can cause low birthweight and drinking like 4 cups of coffee a day MAY contribute.

Your one extra strength coffee will not have done any harm.
