Cramp/pain in shoulder - 11 weeks

Probably nothing but had pain in my left shoulder (in the front) yesterday and it's still here today. Was pretty bad in the night. It's more a cramp feeling than anything else (like sometimes get in legs at night, growing pain type) and going down and including my elbow.
Pre-pregnancy (pre-constant paranoia ) wouldn't think anything of it, probably slept badly on Wednesday night, but because it's still here and shoulder pain always crops up as something bad in pregnancy I thought I'd ask just in case. Seems can be symptom of ectopic (but am 11 weeks and had an ultrasound the other day and all in right place!) or preeclampsia, but way too early for that I think and blood pressure low yesterday. Any ideas? Thank you!

Anyone? It really is quite painful and have only had cramps in legs before, never shoulders.

If you had a scan the other day and everything is in the right place I am sure its not an ectopic would have been picked up on scan. It could be that you are more prone to muscle strain in pregnancy due to hormonal changes etc. I am 11 weeks too and have had lots of abdominal stretching/discomfert.
Try not too worry but if really concerned call your midwife.
Take care

As the pain has been with you for over 24 hours I think I would speak to the midwife or the GP and ask if someone can just check you over. The worry isn't good for you anyway. But agree with imopop that it's probably just hormones acting on your tendons etc. Are you sleeping on your left hand side? Perhaps you need a bit more support in bed?

ShowOfHands · 30/11/2007 10:42

It could be a trapped nerve, something I suffered with in pregnancy in my right shoulder. I slept on that side quite a lot and slept solidly without moving. Feels crampy/achey/numb and can end up making your arm, neck and back feel similar. If it is this a hot water bottle and paracetamol can help.

Get it checked to be on the safe side but your ligaments, muscles and tendons will be more prone to stretching in pregnancy.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but certainly get it checked out to be on the safe side. You could always phone nhs direct if you didn't want to trapse to the doctors - they might be able to shed some light on it. I had a weird muscle twitch in my right shoulder for weeks in the first and second trimester, really annoyed me after a while! I don't know what it is with shoulders and pregnancy! Sorry to hear your are so uncomfortable though, have you tried a hot water bottle on it in the mean time?

Thanks so much for answering everyone. Am feeling very reassured! I think as you say it's probably the hormones loosening everything up and then I've stretched or slept in the wrong position (Showofhands, I'm sleeping very heavily!) - I might get a support cushion or something Talktothebees. Hot water bottle sounds a very good idea too.

Well thank you so much again, feel much better knowing you've all had the same. Will do what you suggest to ease the pain and then see if it's better tomorrow. If not I'll talk to my midwife (tried to use NHS direct last time I was worried about something but I live abroad so the number won't work. Fair enough I guess but nothing like it over here!).

Oh and good luck with your pregnancy Imopop, nice to be nearing the 12 week mark isn't it?!
