pregnancy in unknown location??

Morning all,

So I’ve recently found out I’m pregnant, clearblue says 2-3 weeks so guessing I’m around 4/5 weeks. I did have a scan yesterday that I booked privately because I’ve got a history of ectopic so wanted to put my mind at ease but if anything I’ve made it worse Blush they could see the sac but not a lot more so they’ve come to the conclusion that it’s either pregnancy of unknown location or I was just simply too early to see anything, so I’m basically just asking has anybody else had a scan too early & had the same news but gone on to have a successful pregnancy?

4-5 weeks is very early for a scan. I had a scan two weeks ago at 5 weeks where we only saw the sac (I've had back to back miscarriages so this was for help with dating the pregnancy more than anything), had my repeat scan a few days ago around 7 weeks and saw the little baby with its heartbeat thumping away. I'd say give it a couple of weeks and go for another scan, hopefully you'll see everything then. Fingers crossed for you! Flowers

@Alltimeblow thank you for responding. They did say it was more than likely a case of just being too early but I’m having bloods done today just to be sure levels are rising as they should be, then I’ll have another scan in 2 weeks. Congrats on your pregnancy Flowers

So had some bloods done today (the company I had the scan done with referred me) & they were up in the 1700 so she said puts me at about 5/6 weeks, I go back on Monday for more bloods so fingers crossed Smile

I'm not sure how they class it as a pregnancy of unknown location if a sac is seen in n the uterus?

shannonl26 · 14/08/2021 18:24

@physicskate a sac was seen but no embryo

When I've had ectopics there was no sac in the uterus, it was all in the tube, so I'm a bit confused by this. But I'm sure the person doing the scan knows better than I do!

Anyway, to answer your question, I had a scan at 4 weeks (updated later to 5 weeks) and she could see the sac (but no embryo) IN THE UTERUS and she basically said congratulations. And I'm now 24 weeks. So from my experience, you're doing fine! But do keep up with the blogs etc.

Soverymuchfruit · 14/08/2021 19:24

*bloods! Not suggesting you blog this!

I had a pregnancy in an j known location around 4 weeks. Luckily I had absolutely no idea what it meant and didn’t even think it was odd and all was fine.

Infact my son is now 5 and this thread made me think why wasn’t I concerned to hear that!

Hope all is good with you OP

I had an ectopic in 2016. Got pregnant again in 2017 and had really bad one sided cramping at about 5 weeks so went in to be scanned. Absolutely nothing could be seen in uterus but nothing found in tubes etc so they said I had a pregnancy of unknown location. Went back just over a week later and the sac etc was found in the uterus. My rainbow is now 3 and a half.

physicskate · 14/08/2021 21:22

Pregnancy of unknown location (PUL) is defined as the situation when the pregnancy test is positive but there are no signs of intrauterine pregnancy or an extrauterine pregnancy via transvaginal ultra-sonography. It is not always possible to determine the location of the pregnancy in cases of PUL.

So if an intrauterine sac is found, that IS the location of the pregnancy. A yolk or foetal pole do not develop outside a sac. Viability would be unknown, but not location? What have I missed? Sorry for being obtuse!

toadstool32 · 15/08/2021 01:11

I was about to say exactly the same thing @physicskate

EasterBunny7 · 15/08/2021 19:52

@physicskate and @toadstool32

They said the exact same thing to me: they recorded a gestational sac but wrote it off as a pregnancy of unknown location.

This was to probably cover their own backside when they're uncertain. In my case, my embryo existed but I was having extremely sharp, one sided pain and bleeding.

shannonl26 · 16/08/2021 08:41

Thanks for all your responses, I’ve got more bloods today to see if HCG levels have risen. The woman from my scan on Friday said to do a test before each blood test so I have done & the tests are getting noticeably darker.

Top 2 are from a few days back, 3rd one is from Saturday & then bottom one is from today. Hopefully this is a good sign Smile

Just thought I’d update anyone who stumbles across this thread having gone through similar, had a scan today where I was measured at 7w3d & saw little heartbeat flicking away! Grin

Amazing how quickly things change during early pregnancy.

Amazing, congratulations! This gives me hope as I'm testing positive at 2-3 weeks on clear blue tests but early scan showed pregnancy of unknown location. Hope my outcome is as good as yours!

@jennyv16 hello, I know this is an old thread but I’m having the exact same symptoms as you. Test showing as 2-3 but early scan is ‘unknown location’ I was wondering what your outcome was? Thank you xx

Hey. Unfortunately for me it didn't work out. I had some previous bleeding in that pregnancy which was basically an incomplete miscarriage. It doesn't mean that's what will happen for you though. 2-3 weeks on a digital is still very early. It's about 4-5 weeks pregnant. Normally you can see a heartbeat at 6 weeks. I am now 25 weeks pregnant so got my rainbow afterwards. Hope it all works out for you x

EDeans10 · 21/08/2022 18:00

@jennyv16 Thank you for replying! I’ve had no bleeding or pain so fingers crossed. Congratulations on your pregnancy xx

I know this is an old thread, in same situation now..did all go well? X

shannonl26 · 22/06/2024 02:43

@Ellsx6 all was well, my ‘pregnancy of unknown location’ is now a beautiful little girl who’s just over 2 years old! Hope all goes well with you x

That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you. I can’t seem to find any success stories and was panicking! I have irregular periods and cycles and only had intercourse 5 times between last period and now. 4 of those being on my estimated fertile week and once on 5th June..for all I know I could’ve ovulated late and conceived on the 5th and only be 4 weeks. I’m hoping anyway! Thanks for the reassurance at this stressful time
