Echogenic kidneys on scan?

Has anyone else had this? Had my 32 week scan yesterday (having regular growth scan due to low Papp-A and polyhydramnios) and they found that the baby’s kidneys were quite bright.

The consultant had referred me for a specialist scan in London this afternoon. She said it could be something wrong with the kidneys or mean nothing, but she wants someone else to do a scan.

I wanted to find out if anyone else has had this and could share their experience.

What happened with your results? Did the brightness ever improve?

Sorry I’ve only just seen this!

They sent us for a specialist scan and they didn’t see any issues. I’ve had two more scans since then and they’ve looked fine each time so fingers crossed there are no problems!

That’s good to know. I’m going through the same thing right now. Both kidneys are bright but I have normal fluid volume and they are not enlarged. I haven’t been able to find anyone going through something similar so I wanted to reach out. All my genetic testing (NIPT) came back low risk but I’ve just been a mess with the unknown

It’s so hard not knowing! Hopefully everything is ok for you.

Hey there! I hope things have progressed well for you. I am going through something similar. Do you have any updates to share?

TheFamousMrEd · 22/12/2021 13:50

Hi @nala931 thankfully we have had no kidney problems and baby is now a happy, healthy 10.5week old.

I hope everything works out well for you!

We went for serial scans at a maternal fetal medicine dr and eventually we’re cleared because baby was never noticed to have cysts and fluid levels remained good. The md thought maybe it was a normal variant for baby. No baby yet but hope it remains where everything is ok

nala931 · 22/12/2021 18:24

Thank you for sharing and congratulations!

nala931 · 22/12/2021 18:27

Thank you for responding and how great there are no cysts! The normal variant would be ideal and I am glad things haven’t worsened for you.
Do you mind if I ask when you are due? I will be thinking good thoughts for you! We are due in April on my husband’s birthday.

Beeskneesandtees · 23/12/2021 02:22

I am due in a couple weeks! I really appreciate that and I certainly will be thinking of you as well. Just try to remain positive, babies develop so much and sometimes they keep you coming back just to watch and wait which can be stressful. I will be thinking of you and you’re little babe!

nala931 · 23/12/2021 03:00

Oh so close! How exciting/exhausting! Thank you for the well wishes!
I have been through a pregnancy three years ago where there were missing parts of a brain at the anatomy scan and unfortunately he was incompatible with life.
We had massive amounts of testing done on us and our current pregnancy with hopes to avoid complications. Unfortunately, life has other plans, but I’m trying to be hopeful the road is just bumpy and we will get to hold our child once we reach the destination…. FINALLY!

Beeskneesandtees · 23/12/2021 03:15

Hugs to you, I couldn’t imagine how hard that was for you. May all your wishes and blessings come true

nala931 · 16/01/2022 04:32

@Beeskneesandtees Have you had your baby yet?! Hoping you have been a busy bee with baby!

WorriedMummy38 · 24/08/2023 16:27

I know this is so old but going through this now and I'm going crazy. I'm.so scared. Did your babies go on to be ok?

TheFamousMrEd · 24/08/2023 20:35

Sorry you’re having a tough time. My boy is almost 2 now and absolutely fine! Hopefully it will be the same for your baby too 🤞

Hi @WorriedMummy38 I wasn’t on the original thread but I had this issue too with my baby so thought I’d just add on. I was devastated at the time because they threw all sorts of scenarios at us, but she was absolutely fine when she was born. She’s now 3 and has no problems. She has a scan once a year to check her kidneys for cysts but so far all clear
