Has anyone had a heterotopic pregnancy?

I was told at a private scan today I had likely miscarried, I got my head around that and came into the EPU to confirm and discuss next steps.

Whilst here I was scanned and the sonographer found a viable pregnancy with a heart beat, measuring 6 weeks instead of 8, but definitely there!

However as she continued looking, she discovered an ectopic twin pregnancy in my ovary which was getting ready to rupture. It’s actually so swollen you can feel it through my stomach (I had thought that was my uterus).

I’ve been admitted and will have surgery in the morning to remove the ectopic. This may cause the viable pregnancy to miscarry, but they will do their best to avoid that.

So today I’ve been not pregnant, pregnant again and then too pregnant. My head is spinning.

Add into the mix this was a pregnancy after quite severe PND the first time. The double HCG has had me on my knees mentally so the past 6 weeks have been hell. I’m relieved that this aspect will be calming soon, but now so worried that my pregnancy won’t survive.

I’m rooting for the tiny baby I saw on the scan today but absolutely terrified. It’s a 1 in 30000 chance for this happening in a naturally conceived pregnancy and I’m just so shocked.

Would love to hear from anyone who has gone through this. If you don’t mind sharing, even if it wasn’t good news I would be really interested to hear the outcome as there’s so little info online or on other ectopic boards.

@LividLaVidaLoca so sorry you went through that! It definitely puts it into perspective that I was lucky it was found when it was. I hope you’re ok now, thank you x

Pregnancy of unknown location (PUL) is defined as the situation when the pregnancy test is positive but there are no signs of intrauterine pregnancy or an extrauterine pregnancy via transvaginal ultra-sonography. It is not always possible to determine the location of the pregnancy in cases of PUL.

So I'm still confused. A sac is the location of the pregnant because that is where the yolk and feral pole develop?? If an intrauterine sac is found, that IS the location of the pregnancy? Viability would be unknown, not location.

@MyDogIsCool

I was in hospital not so long ago with suspected heterotopic pregnancy, I had multiple scans as they could tell properly and my first was too soon, they discussed surgery with me and said that it wouldn't harm the viable pregnancy, sorry you're going through this but hope everything turns out ok for you!!
I'm so sorry for jumping on. I've just discovered I may have this but like you they really can't determine just now! My other pregnancy is viable with heartbeat. Could you let me know if you went through with surgery to let them go in and see what was happening? I'm so worried x

I had a heterotopic pregnancy May/June last year. Private scan at 7 weeks confirmed missed miscarriage but didn't pick up anything else. I had to go into EPU and have medical management and they then picked up a mass in one of my tubes but thought it was a ruptured cyst. Due to the rarity of heterotopic pregnancy, they didn't believe it was a twin ectopic until I was 12 weeks pregnant. I had to have surgery and it ruptured while I was on the table and I almost bled out and subsequently lost a tube. I hope you are recovering okay @Glowinthedarkskeleton. It's a horrible thing to experience and very lonely as it doesn't happen to many people. I was worried I wouldn't be able to conceive again but I've just found out that I'm pregnant. EPU are being great so far and have booked me a scan at 6 weeks to make sure baby is in the right place this time.

@OVO1410 I’m so happy to hear you’ve had a happy ending. Wishing you all the best with this pregnancy!

What you went through sounds completely traumatic, I’m sorry that happened to you.

Thank you @Glowinthedarkskeleton. I hope the surgery was successful and that the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful Smile

Laurenxx94 · 20/08/2021 06:19

@Glowinthedarkskeleton how are you?
Sorry for jumping on.
I went for Early scan yesterday and seen my baby with heartbeat to then be told they seen ectopic in tube.
Had laprascopy yesterday and discovered it was only another cyst.
I don't know if my baby will survive now but apparently the chances of that happened are quite high. In for another scan next week 🤞 hope your ok x

I had a heterotopic pregnancy .. natural conception.
I had a very painful miscarriage at 8 weeks . Had the contractions and all and that week my hcg levels were still rising and what they thought was a cyst in my right tube was actually a 9 week baby that was growing in a weeks time. I had surgery as soon as they figured that out and had my right tube removed as well . I felt something was wrong the whole time and I kept saying that. I also had abnormal bleeding but didn’t feel to much pain on that side . I was crampy and my back hurt but that was all that would indicate one in the wrong place . If you feel something is wrong def trust that.
