Will they want to test the baby’s glucose level before we give the first feed?

AdventuresAwait · 23/08/2021 17:46

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken, in the information pack I was given from hospital it says they'll check it after the first feed and before the second.

That’s alright then. It’ll be no different to my first two (except the blood checking)

AdventuresAwait · 23/08/2021 17:54

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken I'll check when home but I'm sure that's what it said.

bewitchingnight · 23/08/2021 18:37

@Bubbles1st I would find that encouraging, I think I would find glistening encouraging at this point to be fair Grin I'll have to ask the midwife for some tips as well!

Moominmiss · 23/08/2021 20:53

Just had to share. Just had a go at properly collecting colostrum for the first time.

I thought I’d get some seeing as I do leak a bit if I squeeze gently.

But can’t believe it, I got a whole 1ml syringe full in about 5 minutes.

I have 9 more syringes here but going to leave it tonight and have another go tomorrow. If it keeps flowing this easily I’m going to order some more syringes!

@Moominmiss wow that’s amazing!! I think I would have a party and cry if I did that 😂
I have never leaked anything but I’m hoping that won’t matter when I start trying to do it!

I’m thinking I might wait until 39 weeks (Friday) and then start 🤞🏼

@Moominmiss well done pleased it's proving productive for you, I'll be happy if I can finish filling one syringe by the end of 24 hours!

Moominmiss · 23/08/2021 22:33

@CherLW i’d have started later if it wasn’t for the fact my section is next week. I’m hoping to do at least one syringe a day between now and the section date.

@Bubbles1st I wasn’t expecting to get a whole syringe. When I started I thought I’d be happy if I could get 0.3ml.

CherLW · 23/08/2021 22:35

@Moominmiss it’s really so good! To get all that in one go! I worry when mine start leaking they won’t stop!!

Hi ladies

I'm glad I found this post as I'm a little
Anxious about GD.

I'm currently early days (6 + 5days), amd 40 later this year and have a BMI of 32 so I know I tick a few boxes for GD possibilities.

I was wondering if there anything I can do at this stage to reduce my chances of having it.

I'm already trying to eat much healthier, lots of beans and lentils instead of potatoes, eggs instead of cereal etc. but I'm torn between cutting down on all the white carbs though if I may need to cut them out in a few months time 🤣

Any advice going forward would be hugely appreciated. With my age and my weight I'm really keen to keep all other high risk options to a minimum if possible.

Bubbles1st · 24/08/2021 09:53

@WeGoAgain123 many congratulations first!

Whilst you may meet some of the risk criteria for diagnosis it is completely hormonal at the end of the day and depending on your placenta.

Whilst you the things you mention maybe be a healthier alternative GD doesn't really discriminate much and beans and lentils ultimately are still carby and wouldn't necessarily affect any potential future diagnosis unfortunately.

Do you have any parents with diabetes? If not you're not likely to be screened early for it and my suggestion would absolutely carry in as normal within reason and enjoy your early pregnancy. You never know what's round the corner and I think I speak for all the ladies here that the stress of diagnosis is quite the kill joy even if temporary. So cross that bridge IF you come to it at all.

AdventuresAwait · 24/08/2021 10:03

@WeGoAgain123, I'm also nearly 40 (4 weeks after baby is due) and my BMI is 39. However, I was screened primarily as one of my parents has type 2 diabetes. I found out I had GD at 26 weeks and am now 37+5 and will be giving birth next week.

I was told by the diabetic team that gestational diabetes is different from other types as it is hormonal and simply due to the pregnancy hormones so I believe there is little that can be done to prevent it, though of course a healthy diet is good during pregnancy anyway! Diet changes can help somewhat I think but it's very much how much our bodies can tolerate the different foods unfortunately. Mostly, the blood sugars return to usual after the delivery of the placenta, showing it is the hormones.
Though there may be risk factors, the diabetic nurse told me it is something that is not our fault, simply a bodily reaction to the changes.

Moominmiss · 24/08/2021 10:13

@WeGoAgain123 I’m 39 and bmi of 30 pre pregnancy.

As the other ladies have pointed out, GD is more hormonal and very little you do or don’t do will affect whether you’re going to get it. Although obviously eating healthily is a great thing to do anyway.

I’d been eating really well during my pregnancy as I was conscious that I didn’t want to gain too much weight as I’d been overweight to start off with.

I was only tested for GD as my dad is type 2 diabetic so without any immediate family members diabetic you may find you aren’t screened automatically for it.

I would enjoy your pregnancy and eat what you want, within reason!

If the time does come when you need to cut down on carbs and sugar, you’ll soon get fed up!

Then there’s always the chance that regardless of how well you eat with GD your sugar levels just can’t be controlled through diet alone due to it being largely down to the placenta. I was initially able to remain diet controlled but as the pregnancy progressed I couldn’t control my fasting levels and am now insulin dependent.

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken, following on from yesterday, I checked the information I was given from my trust and have attached it.

Thank you. That’s reassuring. At least I can just get them straight on like I did with my first two xx

CherLW · 24/08/2021 18:03

@WeGoAgain123 congratulations ❤️

If it was me I would just carry on as normal and eat what you normally would within reason. I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and for me personally I would have really really struggled sticking to a GD diet for basically my whole pregnancy.

I was told it was nothing to do with how much sugar I ate or what I ate or my weight etc before diagnosis.. i couldn’t have changed it, it’s all due to placenta and those lovely pregnancy hormones. 😊

Heyy just a quick question I’m 36 weeks on Friday…
My readings have been in range for a while now so I tasted myself with 5 chocolate fingers before I tested I was 5.3 then after 15 minutes I tested again went up to 6.5 then after n hour it went back down to 5.3 do we think that my readings are getting better coming close to 36 weeks or do we think I did Spike slightly and then it just come back down? Confusing question really hahah xxx

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 25/08/2021 18:54

I don’t think 6.5 would be considered a spike, would it? Everyone’s glucose levels would rise slightly after chocolate.

Poppysmile · 25/08/2021 19:03

Yes I did think that, I’m just overthinking everything gonna stop testing myself so much and try and relax haha!!

Bubbles1st · 25/08/2021 19:09

@Poppysmile I understand that to spike test you test every 15 minutes up to the hour not just once. As it can still rise and crash.

However saying that my tolerance at 37+5 is definitely changing.

Poppysmile · 25/08/2021 19:12

@Bubbles1st that’s interesting to know for next time I have a treat then Thankyou for that xx

Bubbles1st · 26/08/2021 10:02

I'm so hungry today.... I just want to eat everything 😭

Scotti84 · 26/08/2021 11:23

@Bubbles1st me too! Why is it some days are fine and some days its so hard to control the hunger?! Went out with hubby for brunch as hes finished work now for 7 weeks (holidays used up and dad month) and had an awesome breakfast... its our fave bakery and they do great brekkie options, this was healthy and with lots of varied things, i am stuffed and within testing limits! See how long that lasts 🤣

Ladies I had my baby!! So shocking as he was 1 week and 1 day off his due date! They said it was rare for a baby with a diabetic mum to be early or not be induced!!

Just incase anyone was worrying… I was told Jesse would be about 9lb when he weighed 6lb 10 3 weeks ago and he was apparently 97th percentile at the time!!
When he was born he was 6lb 9oz and so tiny!! I know he was early but only a week! I wish I didn’t spend so much time worrying what they said as really no one knows until they arrive and either way they really are just perfect!!

I can’t wait to hear about your babies and births!! Xx
