Tiredness in second pregnancy

Hi all- I just wondered if anyone found they were more tired in their second pregnancy compared to their first at all? I'm 15weeks now and I'm fairly sure that last time I was starting to feel much more energetic at this point! Is it just because I'm now running after a 3 year old and not able to rest as much? Or should I be a bit more worried? So as not to drip feed I've also been having a few headaches when I wake up in the morning that could be because of DS3 shouting at me from his room lol

Yes. Much much more tired and yes it's due to being on the go constantly chasing a feral 2 year old about as well as all the colds, bugs and general ick that nursery were sharing!

I also had quite bad headaches at that same point and took it as a sign to slow down a bit (or at least try). As soon as I got more sleep the headaches vanished!

Yes - it is has been so much harder. I'm 28w with baby number 2, also have a 3yo. I guess its a mixture of being older and like you say, running after number 1. Things that have helped me included cutting down on sugar (less crashing in the afternoon) and going to bed nice and early. Also, get breaks from the 3yo where you can!

Thanks both glad it's nothing to really worry about! Been feeling a bit guilty that I haven't been doing much with DS over the holidays but I've just been so tired! Luckily he's got a trampoline party date in a couple of days then he'll be busy with all the new toys he gets for his birthday a few days after that so he might calm down a bit

DS also starts at school in September so I'll have plenty of time to rest then I hope!

Yep, much harder and much more tired. I’m 23 weeks with a 2.5 year old. It’s all that rest you can’t take this time… anything you can do to make your life easier, do it. I used to walk a lot more but one walk a day knocks me out now…

Carbis · 09/08/2021 13:06

Yep, it’s tiring! I am 30 weeks and have 17 month old going through a sleep regression. Are drinking enough? The headaches could be dehydration? I definitely don’t drink enough on the days my LO is home from nursery.

Yes. I am absolutely exhausted this time round and the nausea has been awful. I think it's because I have less free time to rest or sleep because of my toddler and working full-time, and I'm now older, as others have said.

I can't wait until I can tell work tbh because although I am doing my best I am really not up to it at the moment. Spending hours a day on zoom calls is draining the life out of me.

I'm exactly the same, 18 weeks with a nearly 3 year old. Luckily my DH is a saint and often lets me nap in the afternoon! Had bad nausea and migraines have been bad, just finding this pregnancy hard work. I'm pretty sure at this point in my last pregnancy that I didn't really feel pregnant!

positivebex · 09/08/2021 13:25

I have found this pregnancy way more tiring doesn’t help the toddler still doesn’t sleep through , 30 weeks now and feel so bad for our 19 month old as I just don’t have any energy. Always mention it to your midwife though, she’s checked my bloods everytime I’ve said about headaches and exhaustion but everything keeps coming back ok. Xx

Fawn68 · 09/08/2021 13:38

@RockyisMYRhino yes I'm 30 weeks and have a 2 year old and I am totally exhausted. Just feel lethargic all the time, no matter how much sleep I get! First time round we were able to rest. It's tough!

Jeds55 · 09/08/2021 13:43

Yes, so much more tired. Have a 3 year old too. As pp have said think it's running around after a toddler, working full time and being that bit older - tbf I was knackered before I even got pregnant! Also think it's because I was in worse shape and a stone heavier when got pregnant and already so much bigger at this stage than last time.

RockyisMYRhino · 09/08/2021 13:54

Thanks ladies, I have my 16 week check next week so I'll mention it and the headaches to the midwife when I see her.
@Jeds55 I know what you mean about being bigger earlier - I'm already cracking out a few bits of maternity wear and am also not as fit and heavier than last time too which probably doesn't help

This is totally my life right now!! Almost 18 weeks and I definitely had buckets more energy first time round. I was ridiculously well in my first pregnancy so I have such unrealistic expectations! I've been very lucky so far but the tiredness is something else. My biggest issue is that the insomnia I had in the early weeks last time looks like it's here to stay. My toddler has pretty much stopped his nap which is fine as he's a nightmare at bedtime if he does but filling the entire day is just exhausting. My husband is wonderful and does as much as he can to help but unfortunately hasn't found a way to get me to sleep through the night. I've just had to lower my expectations for now and do what I can to get by.
