Constant Spotting

Hi
Just wondering if anyone has had anything similar, I am 10 weeks pregnant and every few days since week 5 I have had on and off spotting (it's more like a bloody discharge and is only when I wipe). I have had 2 reassurance scans now and heard the heartbeat so I know all is ok in that sense but the spotting is still making me nervous.
They can't see any reason for spotting on any of my scans either.
Any advice/reassurance welcome.

Are you having sex or anything like that? Your cervix can have little bleeds when it gets irritated during pregnancy - something to so with the increased blood flow I believe. If you’ve been seeing a heart beat and your sonographer hasn’t seemed worried, I’d try not to worry too. Could always mention it to your midwife for peace of mind? All the best x

I had cervical ectropion which caused spotting until 12 weeks and then stopped instantly. It’s very common if you’ve used hormonal contraceptives, apparently, and it reacts to the increased hormones in the first 12 weeks.

I’m 21 weeks now and all is good. Mine was only when I wiped too, and the midwifes and EPU seemed very disinterested - in hindsight, I suppose there’s little they can do - but I did find it stressful.

Same here, I have cervical ectropion & had spotting throughout my first 12 weeks. Even having a bowel movement could cause irritation & bleeding. I'm now 25 weeks & haven't had any bleeding since 12 weeks. Spotting is really scary in early pregnancy, I've had previous losses so any bleeding was always bad news to me prior to this pregnancy.

Thank you all you've been very helpful. I have my 12 week scan in 2 weeks so maybe they will be able to see if anything is causing it then as it's a more in depth scan.

@JackJack84 @TakeYourFinalPosition
How did your cervical ectropion get diagnosed?

OP posts:
JackJack84 · 09/08/2021 14:38

@Icklemissgem I had a smear test in February just before I found out I was pregnant & the GP told me then

Greeneyesbiglashes · 10/08/2021 18:34

I’m 35ish weeks and haven’t had bleeding for around 11 weeks but have had it on and off throughout pregnancy. Have had to go in when i’ve bled each time past 16 weeks but has gotten less and less as pregnancy progressed. Like other posters, they told me I have an ectropion cervix and diagnosed it on more than one occasion with a speculum. Mine was on and off the very few days or so nearer the beginning so could be the same with you x

Icklemissgem · 10/08/2021 20:15

@Greeneyesbiglashes thank you for your reply. I am glad it has eased off for you at the moment, it's so worrying every time I go to the toilet and see it!
When you had to go in each time you had a bleed after 16 weeks what did they do, just check baby was ok with a scan? (Sorry hope that's not too intrusive). Unfortunately I have a condition which means a speculum exam is out the question (smear tests are also a no!) so just a bit worried about it all.
So far I've had scans every 2 weeks to check all is ok.

Hey guys I've had positive tests all last week and literally today too I had a positive. Now I went to the toilet and have a light bleed but nothing too sore, my boobs tho are sore and my nipples hurt plus the bottom of my back is where the pain is? I'm really worried 😢is this normal ? I had a chemical last month? So praying this is just implantation or a really light bleed. I know this picture is gross but your thoughts would really help me.

‘Reassurance scans’ only show you what’s going on on that day. Bit pointless unless you’re ruling out an ectopic. I spotted on and off up to 12 weeks with my first. My second I think I spotted up to eight weeks. I actually spotted less with my missed miscarriage at 11 weeks. Sometimes I think it’s just things bedding in. Don’t forget there’s a lot going on in there! Hope it works out ok for you

Thanks I'll just have to wait it out and see if anything changes. Just so hard not knowing what going on😣but thank you.
Greeneyesbiglashes · 10/08/2021 20:25

Thank you! I’m sure if they say that there is nothing to worry about then that’s the case, but I completely understand how it can set off anxiety. I was really really anxious about it and got very upset every time I saw it. Mine was mostly when I wiped but also sometimes drops in the toilet too (sorry probs TMI)!

So the first time they sort of took it more seriously was when I was 16 weeks. I did tell them at EPU etc. and I had a scan and some private ones and they couldn’t see blood on the scan so determined it must be in my cervix. After 16 weeks (and up till last time I bled around week 25) they checked heartbeat, urine samples, did some swabs which did actually show an infection which they thought could have irritated the cervix too and did the speculum.

Annoying you can’t have the speculum but they did almost determine mine before the speculum as no pools of blood were seen on the scan which sounds the same as you.

My blood was mainly pink not sure if yours is similar x

Icklemissgem · 10/08/2021 20:45

@Greeneyesbiglashes thank you so much that's really helpful.
Yes mine is also when I wipe, they've checked every scan and said the same they can't see any reason for the bleeding.
I have my 12 week scan in 2 weeks time so I will ask again and as that's a more thorough scan just double check they can't see a reason for it. Mine is red in colour (scary but has been the same throughout), and is more like bloody discharge.
I've spoken to my midwife who has told me not to worry as it's common and happens to a lot of women but that doesn't calm my nerves 🤣
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy- not long to go now xx

@Lauren94laffertyx with my last pregnancy I kind of found comfort in the fact I couldn’t do anything about it. I had bleeding so had one scan to rule out ectopic and then I just left it up to nature. I carried on bleeding on and off and actually went to my 12 week scan half expecting to find nothing there. It is a tough time but you can’t let yourself start off this stressed because there’s lots of hurdles to jump with pregnancy and motherhood. You’ll end up a nervous wreck!

Greeneyesbiglashes · 11/08/2021 12:29

@Icklemissgem

Sounds very similar to mine! I think it’s a really good sign that it’s not near baby and sounds then that it is on the outside, so maybe cervix like mine? Mine was certainly hormone related i’m sure.

Yes i’d mention it at the 12 week scan, I did and like you say did a thorough scan. Lol no it never does calm your nerves, if only “don’t worry” meant you actually just stopped worrying haha! But it’s a good sign they don’t feel overly concerned though.

Hopefully yours will stop soon! When I first started at 4 weeks I bled for 2-3 weeks straight and then it finally tapered off and was then on and off each week or so... then gradually become less and less common.

Let us know how you get on at your 12 week scan!

Thanks very much re my pregnancy! 💞x

TakeYourFinalPosition · 11/08/2021 13:00

@Icklemissgem A speculum exam showed my cervical ectropion.

They don’t scan here for repeat bleeding - the NICE guidelines say repeat scans can raise anxiety, as they don’t provide any reassurance that things are still okay a few days later, so they won’t do it here. They put it down as spotting unless it gets heavy enough to fill a pad within two hours. You can, apparently, push for a visual exam of your cervix, but I don’t think that’s common.

But like I said, mine stopped almost immediately at 12 weeks and I’ve had nothing since, so it might stop for you as your hormones regulate, too. If it doesn’t, they may well treat it as part of pregnancy for you, if you don’t have any other concerning symptoms. By itself, small amounts of red spotting is quite common, and doesn’t mean anything bad.

They couldn’t see much on my 12 week scan to reassure me about the bleeding, just that it wasn’t a hematoma - I think erosion can only be diagnosed visually, or that’s what they do here. But it was a reassuring scan, and my 20 week scan was nice; too.

All the best to you Flowers

Icklemissgem · 11/08/2021 20:12

@TakeYourFinalPosition thank you, I am trying to stay calm but unfortunately I have had 4 miscarriages previously so am always fearing the worst I think, especially at the sight of blood.

Everyone on this thread has definitely reassured me though and realising it's very common is also a help.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy xx

Sorry for butting in guys but can anyone help ???

So on Sunday I had sex and also had 2 strong positive lines on my ovulation test that day. So that was fine, also my period was 3 days late, so I was confused as to why the lines were positive. Also got my period on the 4th day it would have been late again... only bled for 3 days, the first day it was light then went red like a gush of it then calmed and now it's stopped and gone really dark brown which is weird, I usually bleed for 5 days plus on the 3rd days it's still usually bright red and heavy. Just rather confused tbh.... could I have ovulated late on ?? Plus I have the weirdest minty taste in my mouth 😩it's driving me mental. Anyone have anything similar?
