Bleeding in early pregnancy

Can anyone offer their experience of bleeding in early pregnancy. I am 4-5 weeks pregnant and have been bleeding for 3 days, on and off and fairly light. I had a scan yesterday and the yolk sac measured 3mm. They couldn't offer me any reassurance and I have been advised to rest until my next scan in 2 weeks. It is difficult to remain calm when so little is unknown. If you can share any experience or support that would be fantastic. Thanks you x

I had bleeding in both of my successful pregnancies. I also had 2 early miscarriages.

The anxiety it creates is really hard to manage. But lots of people have some light bleeding in early pregnancy and it’s all ok.

Thank you I really appreciate you sharing.

Do you know what reassurance can be taken from an early scan?

I had a scan at 4-5 weeks and was told the same. No reassurance.

I’m sure by a scan at 6-7 weeks they could see a small heartbeat.

I had a little bleeding like you describe around weeks 7/8 of my second pregnancy but it did stop and all was well. It is hard not to worry, and to think the worst, I hope you can try to distract yourself from doing that. I remember searching online for more info/answers and finding myself on here. I hope these messages provide a little bit of comfort to you. My midwife told me it is common.
Sending love x

I had bleeding early on (about 5-6 weeks) I went to the EPAU and similarly, found a yolk sack but they were unable to reassure me and I had to wait 2 weeks until I was 8 weeks to have an early scan. I wasn't hopeful but everything turned out fine and we even got a little picture too which was all the more reassuring. I'm coming up to 12 weeks now and I've not had bleeding since & everything is well. Fingers crossed for you but try not to worry, I know it's hard. ❤️

@ffloz that's so lovely to hear your story and that things are working out. Thank you for the reassurance. The EPU have really worried me, but I guess they can't provide any information either way when they don't know how things will progress over the next couple of weeks. Did you continue bleeding until your 8 week scan? Sorry to hear you have gone through such a worrying time. I am trying to distract myself as much as possible and rest xx

I had bleeding at 4-5 weeks then also 7 weeks with DS and the rest of the pregnancy was fine. I actually thought the bleeding at 4-5 weeks was a period and only realised I was pregnant a couple of weeks later

Cocomade · 01/08/2021 09:37

Being so early op you don't tend to see much on scans. They are always best 7weeks plus.
I had bleeding the same time as you, had a scan through my ivf clinic and only seen yolk sac too. Two weeks later I seen a HB.
It is very common to have some spotting early on.

ffloz · 01/08/2021 09:48

@forlove it's awful when they aren't able to reassure you and you feel left in the dumps! I was bleeding up until the scan, I wasn't feeling hopeful and neither were they but everything was fine and strangely enough in less than about a week the bleeding stopped! I think baby was probably playing some kind of trick with us! Haha.
It's important to remember that bleeding and spotting is quite common especially during this time. You're doing so well! Keep distracting yourself and try not to worry. Please let me know how it goes ❤️ I'm not sure how this mumsnet works but feel free to pop me a message if you need to :)

Hi, I’m currently 4 weeks and 5 days pregnant. I started lightly bleeding Friday which got heavier Sunday and is still heavy today (like a bad period). I went to my EPU for a internal scan today and they couldn’t find any sign of the pregnancy, but did say this could be due to it being too early. Should anything at all show by now?
It could also not be there if I’ve miscarried, and im also under investigation for a possible ectopic. I’ve had bloods done today and having a repeat Thursday to see if HCG levels rise, if so then a rescan next week.
They also told me during the scan I have a heart shaped womb,I have a 4 year old and have never been told this, and could be bleeding from one side. Does anybody have any experience of this?
It’s a much wanted pregnancy and im just clinging onto the little hope I have but after today not looking good and I’m petrified of ectopic 🥺🥺 x

@Lilybsx
Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. It's my first pregnancy. I am learning about bleeding first hand, my EPU didn't tell me very much at my scan last week. Just that I was earlier along than I thought (or there was a problem) and if the bleeding didn't stop I was likely to miscarry. I have read a lot since about bleeding in 1st trimester being normal and I still have my pregnancy symptoms. How are you feeling in yourself. They saw a yolk sac in what we think is my 4-5 week scan, they said it was low in my uterus, which again wasn't explained. I haven't been offered bloods. Did you have these at EPU or your GP? Hang in there, it's such a worrying time. Rest when you can xx

@forlove I feel okay in myself, just really worried and hate being in limbo. How are you?
They didn’t notice a yolk sack or anything on mine at all :( I’m hoping maybe just too early but it’s all pointing toward miscarriage.
I had the blood tests at EPU and a repeat in 48 hours to see if the levels raise as they should or not. May be worth you asking for some xx

Twizbe · 03/08/2021 19:58

I bled on and off through out the first trimester with both mine. I had subchoronic haematomas with both.

It was scary with my first, but less so with second as I was expecting it.

I would go from spotting to full on bleeds to dark brown spotting. I never had any pain though which they said was a good sign.

forlove · 03/08/2021 20:44

@Lilybsx yes it is horrible not knowing and having to wait. I am really struggling with that. I will ask for the blood tests. Can digital pregnancy tests (that indicate how many weeks along) be used to check rising/ falling hormone levels? Hope your pregnancy continues well over the coming days, I believe 3-4 weeks is really early to see anything on an internal U/S. My bleeding has mostly stopped now, on and off spotting. I have a headache and am nauseous xx

Lilybsx · 03/08/2021 20:48

@forlove I’m not too sure about the tests, I think the earlier in pregnancy you are the quicker your levels will fall but I think it can take like a week/two so I don’t know how reliable it will be :( my bleeding has gotten lighter it’s only visible now when I wipe.
Got everything crossed for you! Let me know how you get on x

Does anyone know if ecg levels drop after implantation? Had anyone experienced this? X

I had a scan this afternoon and the yolk sac was no longer there. So pregnancy is lost. Just wanted to share my ending with this pregnancy xxx

Hello everyone, just need some help really. I had a scan last Thursday 30/09 - showed a sac and healthy pregnancy baby measured 2.2mm and a heartbeat! 4 days later I stood up from the sofa and had only what I can explain as a gush of bright red blood. It stopped relatively quick and went to brown blood and has stopped within a matter of 2 days. No pain. My morning sickness is still very much there but I am so confused. Did I loose the baby? I have another scan coming up to check but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this?x

Minster2012 · 06/10/2021 13:20

@Unicornmummy123 I've been told I can bleed quite a bit but if I have a "gush" especially if res blood then to get checked out. I'd speak to your local EPU especially if it went on for 2 days, good luck!
