Have you tried a spoonful of honey and a few drops of lemon juice in hot water?? Take it with paracetomol before you go to bed it always makes me sleep like a log and wake up feeling better xx

Hi there PuppyDogEyes

Sorry you're feeling rough - I have a couple of suggestions.

Try a glass of hot milk with half a tea-spoon of plain turmeric (yes, that's the yellow powdery stuff that goes in curries - you can find it in the spice section of any supermarket or any Asian/Chinese grocery store), and a spoon full of sugar (at least twice a day, if you can bear it). I've just been through a murderous 4 weeks with similar symptoms and have recently started taking this - its a traditional Indian remedy - doesn't taste that great, but turmeric has natural antiseptic qualities that really work. I feel a lot better now.

Another thing that helps to nip an achey throat in the bud is gargling with hot water mixed with soluble aspirin (don't swallow it, just gargle). And rest, of course.

Take care, hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the suggestions

Lightwind - that is a really weird concoction!! but i think i'm going to give it a try. mmm Turmeric!

still fighting this off, it keeps coming back.

taken 8 paracetamols in 3 days? hope that's ok.

bit disapointed though, as haven't had cold/ flu/cough for 2 years and haven't had to take any medication for that long (incl throughout the prenancy)

! hot milk is bad enough. I can't bear the thought of tumeric in it..........

  • Paracetamol a bit useless no?
  • slices of lemon + fresh ginger + cloves boiled 5 mn in water then add honey. A more palatable antiseptic (imo)
  • Gargling with salt water
  • vicks vaporub/tiger balm to sweat out toxins
  • chicken soup & fresh fruit to restore energy
  • Sleep (hopefully no wild toddlers to look after)

Take care

If no better next week maybe need antibios if it's a strep throat?

PuppyDogEyes · 29/11/2007 15:20

getting better...with lots of sleep (no toddlers), vicks, hot bath, gargling salt water, honey and lemon drink (no fresh ginger in i use the already mashed stuff in a jar).

not taken any paracetamol today (don't wanna take any more)

thanks again x

Thnaks all.

Disneystar - think it would be worth a trip to the doctors if you keep getting a fever.

i was feeling great in the afternoon, went food shopping, came back and got progressively worse.

can't clear my throat, or coat it in flem (yuk) extremely dry, scrathy with sharp pain now.

Lost my voice. (not sexy husky gone, gone entirely)

gonna get DH to call doctor's today.
can't take this over the weekend.

(apparently i didn't let him sleep coz i was thrashing arms and legs about in my sleep!? usually i can't move in bed, getting too heavy!)

paracetamol only works in the sort term.

vicks in helping to keep my nose unblocked - so the good news is I can still breathe!!!

No more honey lemon drinks!!!! too chicken to try turmeric & milk

if dr gives any particularly good advice i'll pass it on...

OH no!!
Sounds like you need the heavy duty stuff. Hope you get to see Dr today.

lightwind · 30/11/2007 10:39

Hey there PuppyDogEyes

I know the turmeric, sugar and hot milk remedy sounds weird - probably not top of the list of curry-house favourites ! But its one that hundreds of people in India believe to be effective - and Ayurvedic medicine advocates the use of turmeric for its antiseptic qualities. (Try Googling turmeric hot milk cough, you'll see what I mean)

If the thought of a whole mug of it is too daunting maybe you could start with a less than a quarter tsp of turmeric in half a mug of warm milk + sugar - just swig it down in one gulp. I've been taking it and it really does work. (Heaven help me, I've even started enjoying the taste, though didn't like it at all to start off with!)

The chicken soup thing is another a tried and tested solution - deffo go with that.

I've been doing steam inhalation too - especially at bed-time, which helps keep the airways clear.

Take care, hope you feel better

PuppyDogEyes · 30/11/2007 18:29

i think the dr thought i was very rude at first, because i hadn't replied to any questions.
i had, but he didn't hear me!! He seemed a little embarassed and attitude changed when face to face realised my voice had gone completely.

Apparently, its just a virus.

have to rely on paracetamol.

looks like i will be trying turmeric and milk... later ...

really wanted to finish baby shopping this weekend.. oh well have to wait 'till next weekend.
