IVF pregnancy - empty sac

2 weeks ago I had a positive pregnancy test. It's an IVF pregnancy. Today I am 5+4 weeks. Went in for an early scan due to previous failures & some abdominal pain.

They saw a 9 mm sac but it's empty. So they decided to do a vaginal scan & the same. No yolk sac to be seen. Have to go next Thursday again but I am very scared and stressing out. Yesterday my HCG was 11,900 which is a really good number & has been doubling nicely every 53-54 hours or so.

Is there any hope still left? has anything similar happened to you?

Sorry, I don't know if there's any hope so just wanted to say I'm thinking of you and will keep everything crossed for you 💐
I don't know if it's too early to tell or if the absence now means it hasn't worked this time. My clinic didn't plan my first scan until 6+2 so it seems you will know more on Thursday but it's horrible to be in limbo.

What did your clinic say?

morningvenus · 30/07/2021 15:33

Thank you for you kind message @Aranciata
It's not the clinic who scanned. It's Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit.

They said it might be too early & best to wait a week.

Hey morningvenus, I had an empty sac at my early scan following IVF and unfortunately it wasn't good news for me. Having said that, my HCG was dropping and I was 6+3, they rescanned me but made it very clear from that early scan that they were only rescanning to help me manage my miscarriage and that there was no way the pregnancy was viable. From your post it sounds like that is not the case here so I have everything crossed that it's just too early for them to see anything and next week will bring positive news for you Flowers

morningvenus · 30/07/2021 15:52

@GlamourSpider - Thank you. And, I am so sorry for your loss. This is my 4th IVF & have had 3 early MCs before. I know how devastating it can be.

Do you remember how early your scan was or what was the size of sac or when did your hcg started dropping? Sorry if these questions are hard to answer. Feel free to not respond.

Hi, I had this at around the same time, empty sac, then a week later fetal pole and heartbeat. That was the longest week ever. Good luck

Scirocco · 30/07/2021 17:06

Hi, I'd say it's probably too early to say for sure either way. A gestational sac measurement of 9mm seems pretty on-track for your dates, and I remember reading that it can be hard to see if there's a yolk sac until the gestational sac is at least 10mm.

If your hCG levels are good, that's reassuring.

I really hope the next scan has good news for you.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 30/07/2021 17:09

I didn’t have IVF, but I had a scan at exactly 6w and they could only see an empty sac, and told me the pregnancy might not be viable.

I had to wait nearly two weeks for a rescan - went back at 7+5 and there was the heartbeat. I’m nearly 20 weeks now, and all is good.

Best of luck to you Flowers

morningvenus · 02/08/2021 12:48

@TakeYourFinalPosition - Congratulations on Your Pregnancy Flowers. Your story gives me hope :) Thanks for that

@Hotpinkangel19 @Scirocco - Thank you so much for sharing your story, & the information and giving me hope

Indeed this week is very long but I am trying to stay calm as stressing may cause harm.

I was told I had an empty sac at 6 weeks and went back a week later and everything was fine. She's 9 now. Good luck x

Enwi · 02/08/2021 13:29

I think an empty sac at 5 weeks is really common. With both my successful pregnancies I’ve had an empty sac at 6 weeks, and then when I’ve returned at 7/8 weeks their is a baby and things have caught up fine. Good luck x

TheBestCandidateByFar · 02/08/2021 13:34

Good luck for your scan OP.

morningvenus · 03/08/2021 16:50

@eatsleepdream @Enwi @TheBestCandidateByFar
Thank you ladies for your stories & so much hope.

Just 2 more days

Hi, I’ve unfortunately had bad news in the same situation. I know that wait between scans is the longest of your life and I also know from obsessive googling and threads like this that there are plenty of people who get good news.

I hope sincerely you can be one of them x

Aranciata · 03/08/2021 18:29

Sorry to hear of those who have had bad news at early scans. 💐

Will be thinking of you on Thursday OP.

Sallycinnamum · 03/08/2021 18:36

OP the same happened to me and I had bleeding too but my levels were rising so I did have hope all would be OK.

Went back for a scan 2 weeks later and there was a heartbeat and he's 12 now! So all might be fine. Good luck!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/08/2021 22:24

OP, if it's an IVF pregnancy are you 5 + 4 from egg collection or 5 + 4 from the date of your last period (so about 2 weeks earlier than egg collection)? If it's from the date of your last period than I think it's completely normal not to see anything much yet (I read they sometimes don't see a heartbeat till about 7 weeks). Your HCG rising is a positive sign.

morningvenus · 04/08/2021 11:31

@LividLaVidaLoca - So sorry to hear about your loss. I have had this before & know how hard it can be. To be honest I don't like early scans but I have developed OHSS since the positive pregnancy test. So EPU is monitoring me closely. Thank you for your best wishes

@Aranciata @Sallycinnamum @IamnotwhouthinkIam - Thank you for sharing your stories & facts & for your best wishes. When I went for my scan I was 5+3 from my LMP. It was about 3.5 weeks since egg collection

Hey Ladies, just to update - saw a yolk sac, an embryo & a flickering heartbeat :) :)

The baby is measuring 6 weeks instead of 6+2 but the nurse said I shouldn't worry about it at all. A few days behind is ok.

becca3210 · 05/08/2021 16:22

Brilliant news!

Scirocco · 05/08/2021 16:45

That's great news that things are progressing. Don't worry about a couple of days either side of your expected dates - at this stage everything is so small that tiny variations can change measurements significantly. Good luck!

Dinosaurus86 · 05/08/2021 17:04

Ah that's great news. I was going to add that I had a scan at a very similar point (to check location due to pain) and only an empty sac was found. I'm now 24 weeks pregnant.

Aranciata · 05/08/2021 17:33

So pleased to read this update morningvenus, after such a long drawn out week for you.

Marty13 · 05/08/2021 21:42

Hey, I was about to say that an empty sac so early is totally normal but I don't need to now :) So happy to see your update. There's still a long road ahead of course but you can celebrate another hurdle passed !

TheBestCandidateByFar · 05/08/2021 21:50

That's brilliant, thank you for updating and happy pregnancy Cake

morningvenus · 06/08/2021 11:39

Thanks so much, ladies.
@Marty13 - I think I will truly only believe when the baby is in my hands
