Could sonographer be wrong?

I had my 20 week scan last Monday and was told I'm having a girl. I'm in complete shock as I already have 2 boys but also, I had The Nub Whisperer review my 12 week scan and she said boy. I also did a sneak peak blood test which came back boy. Also the sonographer said 'I think this is a little girl. I can't see boy bits and I can see some lines' .. could she be wrong? I really hope not. Thanks

Yes the sonographer could be wrong but I'd say there is a much higher chance of her being right that the other 2 tests. I'm pretty sure omthe only way to find out gender in pregnancy is through a scan. Not blood tests or otherwise.

At 20 wks, I would imagine the Sonographer is correct. Congratulations. Someone I know was told initially she was having a boy, went for private scan. When she was asked did she want to know the sex, she said I know it’s a boy, I was told last time, the lady said, no it’s a girl. And she was!

They are more likely to mix up by saying girl when it’s a boy rather than the other way round.

I think blood tests are quite conclusive.

Dutchessofcake · 25/07/2021 07:48

My SIL was told girl at her 20 week scan and was very surprised when she gave birth and they handed her a baby boy Grin. On the flip side, my friends sneakpeek test said boy but she had a girl. Its really easy to get male DNA in the blood test tube when you have males around the house apparently.
Noone can ever be 100% certain. If it matters a lot to you though, I'd maybe book a private gender scan? They take more time and the sole purpose is to determine the sex of the baby so that might reassure you more if they say girl too.

LakeShoreD · 25/07/2021 07:51

Sonographers can be wrong. Not being able to see boy bits at the scan doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a girl and I know more than one person that’s had a surprise boy. That said, it’s much more likely to be correct than nonsense like sneak peak or nub theory. The NIPT genetic testing (like Harmony) is the most accurate way to predict the sex - if you’re really desperate to know definitively you could get that done, it’s a simple blood test, but it is quite expensive. Or get another private scan to see if they also say girl. Congratulations and good luck!

StepladderToHeaven · 25/07/2021 07:52

Well personally I'd ignore the nub whisperer, but apart from that you've had two sources of information, both of which are usually fairly accurate, and they contradict each other. So it honestly could go either way.

Twickerhun · 25/07/2021 07:54

The nub theorist could definitely be wrong. The blood test isn’t 100%accurate and may be significantly flawed if not done in a clinical setting, if it was done in a clinical setting it might be 95% correct. The sonographer can be wrong but at 20 weeks has a reasonable likelihood of being correct.

Twickerhun · 25/07/2021 07:55

So yes - I think are right to be confused

inappropriateraspberry · 25/07/2021 07:58

Well, any of them could be wrong. At least one of them will be right! Does it really matter to you if it's a boy or girl? The more tests/checks you do, the likelihood is you'll get more mixed results. Nothing like this is 100%.
Really, all you can wish for is a happy, healthy baby. Congratulations.

My sister got told she was having a girl and.when she gave birth the baby was a boy so it can happen

RainbowHope4 · 08/11/2021 19:53

I know this post is a few months old but I was wondering if you know the outcome for definite yet? As I thought the sneak peek blood test was supposed to be 99.1% accurate x

SleafordSods · 08/11/2021 20:34

You might get a response if you tag in the OP Rainbow as she's unlikely to get updates on such and old thread Smile

RainbowHope4 · 08/11/2021 20:38

@SleafordSods Thanks! I didn't think of that! 😂 I'll try again!

Itsbeen84yearss · 08/11/2021 20:49

The problem with the sneak peak is if you contaminate the sample it can say ‘boy’ easily. I wouldn’t rely on that or the nub whisperer. NIPT is the most accurate

RainbowHope4 · 08/11/2021 20:52

@Itsbeen84yearss
Yes I've read that. I have a boy dog and apparently that can even contaminate the results!

divacharl · 08/11/2021 21:09

Hi @RainbowHope4 I haven't had baby yet but had another scan 2 weeks later and asked her to confirm the sex, she said 'were you told girl last time because I think it's a girl' .. so 2 scans have confirmed girl.. I am still in denial haha will update you again in a few weeks time... have you done sneak peak?

@divacharl
I did wonder after I'd sent it that you might not have had the baby yet!
I haven't had one but was considering it. However I just had a look at the reviews on trust pilot and the majority weren't good so I'm not sure.
There's an option to go to the clinic to have it done as well as the at home option.
If you have a girl - I won't be having a sneak peek test! 😂
Hope everything goes well. 🌸
