Hi all. I Just wondered what your first period was like after your baby ?

I'm 6w pp, my bleeding stopped around the 3-4w. I started bleeding today so assume this is my period ? It's so heavy though, bright deep red and filling the toilet bowl/pads

Does this sound normal ?

Are you bf?

Pandasarecool · 25/07/2021 04:39

My first was very light but my second was as you describe. Mine have never been the same since having babies. Much heavier.

Honesty, op, damn near everything is "normal." It varies so wildly depending on the woman that there is no normal.

With both of my births, I bled for about 7 days, I exclusively breastfed, and my period started one month postpartum, and was light and normal every month from then on. I thought I wouldn't have a period for quite awhile because I was breastfeeding. Nope. The damn thing came right back.

What you are experiencing sounds very usual.

It might be normal but might not….are you in pain, having cramps?
How quickly is it filling pads? If filling a pad in an hour or less you should seek advice. Hopefully it’s ‘just’ a period but be wary of post partum haemorrhage

In my experience yes, the first period is the period from helll. With my first child it was worst bleeding I had ever had, got it bang on 6 weeks and had my Gp check at the time she assured me it was normal

Yaty · 25/07/2021 06:45

My first period was very heavy, changing super plus tampons every 2 hours for at least 48 hours. It was awful. But it didn't come back until 7 months. Are you having excessive pains or cramps? I know the first period can be bad but as it is only 6 weeks pp I think if it's really heavy, painful or feels wrong might be worth getting checked out.

WalkingMeAway · 25/07/2021 07:46

Thank you. Since my post I've soaked through 4 pads and on to the bed too 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm not BF.

I'm not having any cramps or pains at all.

I think I'll keep an eye on it. Sounds like it might be normal but it's not normal for me which is why I was a bit concerned In the first place.

Thank you all

I had similar to what you're experiencing and assumed it was my period back but in reality for me it was lochia again and my actual period returned at 22ish months post partum (lots of breastfeeding, natural spacing etc) and it was like a normal period.

JLM1008 · 25/07/2021 08:43

I think it’s normal- I’m now on my third period since having my son and my period is super heavy. I now leak constantly on the bed, the sofa. I’m having to use maternity pads as even the high absorbency nighttime pads are not enough. It’s awful and very different to my periods before. This is baby 3 for me and I didn’t have this with my other 2. I guess each pregnancy is different. Luckily i don’t get cramps or pain

WalkingMeAway · 25/07/2021 15:32

@JLM1008 this is also baby no 3 for me and again I didn't have this with the previous 2. They just went back to normal. I've always been very lucky with my period. Very little cramping and not that much bleeding. I really hope they don't stay like thisShock
