Hi! Im 17+5 wks pregnant and I've just been put on the 5th lots of antibiotics (Amoxycillin) for reoccurring ear infection. Has anyone had that many lots of antibiotics while pregnant? I know it supposed to be safe but I'm so worried that it could cause any harm to DS.

TIA xx

I’m 20+5 but only on one set of antibiotics so far. However, I am on 150mg of aspirin daily for pre-eclampsia risk and having been taking daily antihistamines due to hay fever. Usually the only thing I would take is antihistamines and I limit that as much as possible (I don’t think I’ve ever taken this many antihistamines in one year before but it’s been an awful year for hay fever) so I understand the anxiety about taking extra medication.

When I first contacted the GP about antihistamines the doctor first told me to “get through it” without antihistamines. I was really struggling and ending up going back to the GP. The second GP told me about Best Use of Medicines in Pregnancy (Bumps - www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/). You can check medicines and if they’re safe there. However, with regards to medications, she told me that it’s a cost/benefit and when the wellness of the mother is being affected, medication should be taken. If your ear infection is affecting your well-being, then that will also affect the baby so you’re better taking pregnancy approved medication. I think doctors are so risk-averse when it comes to pregnancy that they wouldn’t prescribe you 5 lots of antibiotics if they weren’t sure you needed them and it was better for the long term health of you and baby.

When my mum was pregnant with me, she got repeat Kidney infections and ended up on over 9 courses of antibiotics during her pregnancy. At the end of her pregnancy she was on back to back courses. She was eventually induced because I kept making her sick and they thought it was the only way to get on top of the infection. I’m fine with no adverse effects - even if I do say so myself Wink - and this was 30 years ago when there was considerably less research.

I'm on my fourth UTI at 22 weeks

Pantene23 · 20/07/2021 13:31

Yes I did. Both kids fine.

thebookworm1 · 20/07/2021 13:39

Yes, I’ve lost count. + I’ve had intravenous antibiotics and via injection too. Baby seems to be doing fine so far but it is stressful!

Renee333 · 20/07/2021 14:11

@InTheNightWeWillWish It's so stressing taking all these drugs. All the best to you girl. I hope it's just risk for pre eclampsia and nothing more. :) Same I have not taken this many antibiotics since I can remember, tbh I'm more of the holistic type.

9 courses? oh wow! I'm praying that I won't need any more, but unfortunately the bacteria that I have is only treatable with antibiotics that are not safe during pregnancy. So fingers crossed

I had to take antibiotics all through my second pregnancy from about 9 weeks and everything was fine.

Renee333 · 20/07/2021 14:13

@Pantene23 I'm glad to hear that and thank you for your reply. Hopefully no more for me :)

I had antibiotics for a kidney infection, two chest infections and then pleurisy and my baby was fine!

Renee333 · 20/07/2021 14:22

@thebookworm1 Oh no! But the main thing is that the baby is doing ok. Yes it is so stressful and worrying.
