Should I be worried?

I am 6 weeks pregnant and yesterday had a light brown discharge - not too much. I have a terrible cold and my DS is teething and not sleeping and I am worried that with all the stress I may miscarry. Has anyone else had this?

I heard of one friend who had this before and her GP told her that her cervix wasn't properly closed and she should be careful not to introduce infection - no swimming, no sex.

I don't have an appt with my ob till the 16th and I'm not sure whether I should go see someone before then.

have you got an Early pregnancy unit at your local hospital? I would ring them and ask for a scan or contact your gp and ask them to do it just to put your mind at rest. It could be an implantation bleed. I had this at around 4 weeks, i'm now 16. Good luck

jampot · 06/11/2004 22:04

I had a slight reddy/brown discharge at about 12 weeks (with dd) which was a very stressful time for me too. Everything was okay, but I would just phone GP to make sure everything is checked. Also bled real blood at 21 weeks with ds which also was okay and then again at 36 weeks (3 days before elective c/section). Just give your local maternity hosp a little call to put your mind at rest - or ask Mears! Hope all is well x

My inclination is to say you are worried for nothing... if you are going to miscarry there is a reason for it,.... not running around too much (as the reason) !
I have never heard this infection business but maybe I am wrong.
IMO there is nothing the OB an do to stop a miscarriage (if indeed that is what's happening - but I don't think that's necessarily the case at all actually).... but I can understand the stress.... {{{{hugs}}}}}}

Hi i had the same (cant remember how many weeks i was i was not far gone though) when i spoke to the midwife i was told that it could of been after sex (which it was not) or sometimes you can get it around the time you would of had you period. not saying it is the same but try not to worry to much (hard i know) and i would try and see someone to put your mind at rest hope everything is ok thinking of you big {{{{{hugs}}}}

Def go and see someone (EPU, doc) asap. It is probably nothing but you need to have your mind put at rest. I had similar thing at seven weeks with DS (brown to start then redder) - I automatically presumed it was a miscarriage but turned out to be implantation bleeding and the pregnancy went to term. Do, do go and get it checked out - you'll drive yourself mad otherwise. Hope everything is okay.

popsycal · 06/11/2004 22:22

i had this early on with both pregancies (both fine)

do get it checked out if you are worried though
hugs

Now there is just a little bit of blood too. I've called the hospital and they've just said to rest, that there is not much to do, but to call back if the bleeding gets heavier or I have cramping. I am pretty upset. It took me 8mths to fall this time, 21 mths last time and I'm 35.

I had spotting, like you descride aussiesim, with DS3. I had it at about 5-6 weeks and then again at about 11 weeks.

I had a few early scans, about 6 in fact and everything was fine.

Please try not to worry, which I know is impossible and rest rest rest.

Can you get to an EPU tomorrow at all?

marthamoo · 07/11/2004 08:02

AussieSim, I'm sorry to hear this - it's so frightening but it doesn't neccessarily mean that you are miscarrying. It's hard I know but all you can do is wait and see - there is nothing you can do either way. Best of luck and positive thoughts coming your way - (((HUGS)))

Twiglett · 07/11/2004 08:05

brown blood is old blood

bleeding at 6 weeks is fairly common as an implantation bleed and many people continue to bleed lightly for a number of weeks which can be very scary

but if you can't be reassured you should contact your midwife and arrange an early pregnancy scan

I had red blood after the brown discharge too and called NHS direct and they basically told me if you are going to miscarry there's nothing you can do to prevent it .. there is no advice to rest or anything like that .. I did have an EP scan about 4 days later and everything was fine

MrsWednesday · 07/11/2004 10:38

AussieSim, I'm sorry you're going through this, it's frightening and nerve-wracking. With my DS, I had bleeding at 6 weeks, then again at 8, 10, 12 and 15 weeks, and he was absolutely fine.

I know it's easier said than done, but try to not to panic. I've just had the same thing (I'm nearly 9 weeks) and I'm trying to take it as a good thing - little bean is digging itself in so I'm getting a bit of implantation bleeding (with my missed m/c I didn't have any bleeding, strangely enough).

An early scan would definitely put your mind at rest - if not, even a trip to the doctors would probably help. I didn't have any early scans with my DS but went to the doctor every time I had it and she checked my cervix was closed.

Sending you big hugs.

ZolaPola · 07/11/2004 10:41

hi - i had this with ds and he was fine, quite common i think. try to rest & relax as much as you can (really difficult i know).

nicmum2boys · 07/11/2004 11:10

You poor thing, how are things today?
just wanted to say I know what it's like. I am just 6 weeks pg and I'm going through the same thing as you. I have had spotting varying from brown discharge to bright red blood for the past week now. The doctor won't send me for a scan until I get to 7 weeks, but I know that the rules are different depending on your health authority, and the sensitivity of equipment used.
Sadly my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 5 and a half weeks, but I've had 2 successful pregnancies since then, and I bled in both of those, DS1 at 11 weeks and 26 weeks, and DS2 at 7,9,10 and 11 weeks. I seem to remember when the bleeding started with DS2 that DS1 had been quite poorly and I had had a couple of sleepless nights, and was worried about him, but I'm sure stress alone can't cause a miscarriage. Like everyone else has said, this isn't due to anything you have or haven't done, and sadly there isn't very much you can do to stop a miscarriage if that's what is going to happen.
It's so hard not to panic I know. Right now I don't know wether I'm coming or going. Don't know wether I feel pg or periody, dread going to the loo, and it's always on my mind.
The only thing I can say is please do go and see your GP. He may well be able to put your mind at rest, and at least you will feel like you have taken some action.
In the meantime take good care of yourself, and get as much pampering as you possibly can.(((hugs)))

AussieSim · 08/11/2004 05:14

Today has been fine and I am starting to calm down. I think I can wait till next week to have my scan. Thanks for all the support. It is so reassuring to hear of others that have been through this and everything turned out OK.

I got here a bit late, but can I still reassure you? With ds I bled at 4, 6, 8, 9 & 12 weeks. With this one I bled at 4, 6, & 8 weeks and then a big bleed at 13 weeks. With my mc I bled at 4 weeks and then never again, not at all, not one little bit. So in my experience the bleeding is actually a sign that everything is OK (didn't stop me getting very anxious every time it happened, though!)

Bagpuss30 · 08/11/2004 10:59

Oh, AussieSim, glad you are feeling a bit better. I started to bleed yesterday , first brown and then pinkish but it seems to be tailing off today (for the moment). I am trying to rest as much as I can and have a doctors appointment tomorrow. I bled with my first pg too but not with my last and both were fine. I still have my pg symptoms at the moment so I'm assuming this is a good sign. These posts have really put my mind at rest as I'm 6+2 so thanks everyone .
