GCT 1 hour test question

Hi guys,

I took the glucose challenge test which i have to drink 50g of sweet drink, wait for 1 hour, and take blood sample. It was after my midwife appointment which was at 9am, so actually I went to the appointment with empty stomach, which made me fasted for about 10 hours (I had my dinner at 7:30pm the evening before then had a sip of coke before going to bed around 11pm). The result came back normal (7.1 mmol/L), but knowing that this test needed to be taken in a non-fasted status, I wonder if the result is inaccurate then. What do you think? Do I need to retake it??

xx

I thought you did need to fast for the glucose test.

@dementedpixie
Apparently, this was the first test (1 hour wait) which was supposed to be taken without fasting, then if you don't pass, you need to take the longer test (3 hour) with fasting :(

I only ever had 1 test in my pregnancies.

Maybe ask your midwife

The result will be accurate. You fasted from 11pm to the time of the test. 10 hour fast is sufficient.

A non fasting test is a random blood glucose. I am presuming a GCT is the same as GTT (glucose tolerance test) for which you fast.

At my surgery the standard is to do a fasting test, then drink the drink, wait 2 hours then repeat the blood test.

Fasting levels need to be 5.3 or below. The level after 2 hours needs to be 7.8 or below.

However because of COVID my surgery, and a few others have just been doing the fasting test. Which is what I did. So I fasted 12 hours overnight, had my blood taken at 8am and the result was 6.5, so quite a bit over the 5.3 required.

I’ve been diagnosed based on that and have since begun testing my levels 4 times a day, both fasting and after each meal. My fasting levels I haven’t been able to control and they’ve remained high. So today I have to start in medication and possibly insulin on Friday.

The first test is the fasting one.
