12 week scan, baby has flat face! Worried!

I hope that I’m just being silly but I booked a private scan a few days ago at 12 weeks as my nhs one is quite late and I was worried.

I can’t quite help but think something looks off with my babies face! At my 12 week scan with my other two children you could see a nose but this baby looks like it has a really flat head. It was the first thing I noticed when she put the Doppler on my belly but she didn’t mention anything about it.
Would she? I imagine if she was concerned she would probably have not told me anyway and left it to my nhs scan.

Can this be normal?

It looks fine to me, just that they’ve used a really poor quality scan machine so you haven’t got the clear crisp image you’re used to. Scanning machines aren’t all made equal, and there’s a definite difference between a cheap scanner and a top of the range one in terms of the image quality. Hopefully your nhs one will reassure you

Yep, just a rubbish scan machine. All of the big private scan chains have referral agreements with the NHS if they spot anything wrong.

My NHS 12 week scan was much less clear than other people’s; even people who have used the same hospital. Baby was a bit of a blur! Definitely no nose to pick out… I’m hoping for a better 20 week scan in terms of image quality, but everything is just fine, and your baby will be too Smile

Aren’t you just seeing his/her face turned a bit sideways, so the nose isn’t in profile?

Please don't worry OP - it'a just a combination of a low resolution, grainy image plus the angle of baby's head. Your baby won't be Lord Voldemort...!

I had my 12 week scan in Germany with my DP translating for me ... turned out afterwards that the doctor was a little concerned at first because she couldn't find the nose bone! After quite some time she eventually found it and said it all measured normal and everything was fine! Was a good job I couldn't understand at the time as I would have been really worried!

But what I'm trying to say is that sometimes it does take time for baby to be in the correct position to see certain features, and it even took my very experienced doctor of 20+ years some time to find the sideview of babies face! So I would try not worry about it :)
