Booking appointments / early scans

Hi all.

So I have my booking appointment tomorrow via phone, wondering what to expect?

I think I'm 7+ weeks but wanting midwife to explain as I'm not entirely sure how it works with the dates with a longer cycle. (Might be more like 8 wks?!)

What are all of your thoughts on early scans? I'm sure NHS won't offer a scan until 12 weeks but I would love to see what's going on in there sooner. When's best to get a private scan? Ideally I'd prefer abdominal as I'm sure a lot of prodding and poking is to come 'down there' so I'd rather avoid internal if possible!

Thanks 😊

Also just thought I'd add, I've had no morning sickness at all. I'm sure I'm very lucky and I have feeling sick so I'm pretty happy, just wondering if anyone else has been sickness free? 🤷😂

Congratulations!
Booking appointment will just be loads of questions about your medical history and your family medical history too. If you don’t know some of the answers, that’s ok so don’t worry too much.

Personally I really wouldn’t have an early scan as it causes a lot of unnecessary worry and you can’t often see much anyway! However if you really want to, after 8 weeks is most recommended.

Don’t worry too much at this point about how far along you are. When I had my first, I knew I’d ovulated very late but they wouldn’t listen and just went based off my LMP. Had a scan and ended up being 4.5 weeks earlier than they’d had me down as. I did try to tell them! So had to go back later for a second dating scan as they won’t officially calculate a due date for you until they’ve scanned you at around 12 weeks. May well happen to you too as you have longer cycles so it’s less predictable when you ovulated.

Hey,

Congratulations!

Yes as pp said lots of questions about your health, family history health wise and partners.

Early scan I'd say 8+ at which point you shouldn't need an internal.

Not with you on the sickness I'm afraid I've been sick as a dog since week 6, now week 10 x

Hello. Congratulations on your pregnancy. The booking appointment is normally just a form-filling exercise - details can be found here www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/finding-out/your-first-midwife-appointment/.

They initially date your pregnancy based on the date of your last period and then you get an accurate date at the 12 week scan. Personally with only 4 weeks to go I wouldn’t fork out the money for a private scan.

Congrats and good luck.
Midwife will just go by lmp to date you until they confirm edd at your dating scan.
I had a private early scan in my last pregnancy, saw hb at 8+3 and miscarried baby at 9+3 (spotting started a few days earlier). I had to have internal scans as I have a retroverted uterus, most can have good abdominal scans around 8wk though. I held out for the dating scan with this one and glad I did as she was very active and measured slightly ahead of lmp at 13wk. I couldn't wait 7 weeks for the anomaly scan though and booked a private gender scan half way between NHS scans, was great to see all was well. I'm 34wk now.

@Isitpossi - the same thing happened to me for my first pregnancy. I was all set to meet my parents and tell them the news after the scan, only to discover I was only 10 weeks and needed to return in a fortnight. I had to make up a lame excuse to postpone meeting my parents! 🤣

Congratulations!

Ive just booked an early private scan for when I'll be 10 weeks (by my maths). I've got my booking appointment the week before and Im still not sure if Im going ahead with the early scan as I've heard mixed reviews. I've only booked the scan as Ive had no symptoms whatsoever except 3 positive pregnancy tests- all different brands! I'm going away at the end of August with DH family and would like to have some confirmation I'm pregnant so I can give a reason as to not have a glass of wine at dinner etc
