Can't eat! Covid pre pregnancy

Hi,

I had covid in January 2021, mildly, I lost my sense of smell but luckily never lost my taste!
I still can only smell wiffs of smoke, horrible perfume and horrid smells.

I became pregnant in March and since being pregnant my taste has now changed and its progressively getting worse.
I'm now 17 weeks and majority of foods taste absolutely disgusting and I cannot eat them. I can only eat cheese, pancakes, bread and cereal at the moment.

I have spoken to my GP who says this is a normal side effect of pregnancy and to eat what I can but I'm struggling so much I have no energy and I feel low.

Can any give me any advice or guidance please?

Thank you!

Eat what you can and take pregnancy vitamins

Hi @Sparkles512 I'm sorry you've been having a rough time. But congratulations on your pregnancy! I was terrible with food for a while in my first trimester. It's eased for me now (I'm nearly 16 weeks) but during that time the only fruit/veg I could eat were apples, as they are sweet and a good palate cleanser. I really struggled with a horrible taste in my mouth, so it helped to clear that for at least a short while.

Can you try different toppings on your bread and pancakes, and perhaps put some dried fruit and nuts in your cereal?

If the horrible mouth taste is also a thing for you, maybe try swilling your favourite drink around your mouth and then try some different foods straight after, see if that helps?

You have my sympathies as it's awful, but don't worry about your baby - they will take everything they need from you and leave you feeling worn out, but they'll be fine!

Thank you for your replies, I really appreciate your support 😊

My palette still isn't improving which is very frustrating but I have some energy this week as I'm not working so that's a positive!

Fingers crossed things improve and soon I'll have a healthy baby and be able to enjoy food again 😊

Honestly just eat what you can! I had such horrendous morning sickness for about 18 weeks and that was without covid. I didn’t really get my full appetite back until 27 weeks I’m now 35 weeks. I lost weight but regained and now food tastes a bit too amazing again haha!
Take pregnancy vitamins and just do your best, baby is well protected and stealing all the good stuff from you so sadly, it’s just you that suffers! Hope for it to go away quickly for you xx

@Sheisfee thank you, its so reassuring to hear that other people have struggled too.

I'm 19 weeks so a few more weeks to go but fingers crossed there is light at the end of the tunnel 🤞

Yes I'm worried that once baby is here I will get my appetite back and not stop eating and just pile on the weight but we will cross that bridge when we come to it 🙈🤣

33 weeks now and unfortunately no improvement on the smell or taste 😞

Hoping I get my taste back once baby is here 🤞
