Are baby weights genetic?

Is there a hereditary link between babies weight and what the parents weighed at birth?

Google says that there is but I'd love to hear anecdotal evidence from people here who have already had babies!

I was 9lb11 and my husband was a whooping 13.5lb. My family keeps telling me I'm going to have a massive baby and not to buy too many 0-3 month clothes but who knows really.

I was high 8lbs and DH low 10lbs and both of our DC were around 9.5lbs, i.e. pretty much the average of our birth weights. All full term.

Incidentally, I'm not convinced by the whole a woman won't grow a baby too big for her bit. I was enormous with both (I'm only 5' 2" and didn't spread too much to the side, so was comically large to the front). Both DC had head circumferences over the 99.6th percentile. On DD1 I was induced but the drip didn't do anything - one midwife reckoned her head was too big to descend in my pelvis and put pressure on my cervix to trigger dilation. Ended in a very pleasant EMCS (where they had to use foreceps to get her out).

DD2 was transverse and they struggled to get her out in my ELCS. I read afterwards that the risk factors for transverse lie include a big baby and a small pelvis.

Even if they're a big baby they'll still be in 0-3 for a while. Just maybe not newborn size which is smaller and deffo not tiny baby. But just wait snd see, there's no accurate way of knowing. Baby clothes can be bought easily, so if you're not sure and don't want to buy loads just wait!

I was 9lb 4
My baby was 7lb 8 so a bit smaller

Between us 4 siblings we all weighed between 5lb 2 and 6lb.
I have 5 children, first 4 in the 5 lb region and the last 7lb and at all my extra scans the midwives did agree that sometimes it's just genetic.

No. My sister and I were both 6lbers born at 37wks spontaneous.

My 5 have ranged from 8lb11-9lb10 and all very overdue.

I was 6lb. Dd1 was 9/3. Both born a week late

I think it’s both genetics and also environment.
You can have a big healthy placenta and a pregnancy where you aren’t throwing up every two seconds....all that affects the baby’s birthweight for example.

In my experience yes. I was the heaviest of my siblings at 6lb 6oz, DH was 6lb 5oz; DS1 was 6lb 5oz and DS2 was 6lbs on the nose.
Both were titchy 45cm.

Apparently babies tend to errr on the side of maternal birth weight to make it easier to fit through the birth canal.
