Antibiotics

Seeing as my surgery is shut along with the out of hours service (!) I'll ask you lovely people :)

Last week I was diagnosed with a UTI and took a short course of ABs. I still had symptoms so the doctor prescribed a week's worth and I left a pee sample at the surgery. This came back negative but I'm still having symptoms (mainly pain when peeing and back ache).

Should I start taking the antibiotics? Or try and wait until I can get hold of a doctor for advice?

Tx

Are you saying you haven't taken the antibiotics as/when they were prescribed originally? It's not very clear from your OP.

I took one short course and picked up a prescription for the second lot but waited for the result of the test, which was negative. They didn't advise what to do if that happened.

Did they tell you to wait before starting the course?

No but as the results came back 24 hours later, I thought I would wait. She said if the result indicated I needed a different AB, she would call. She didn't. I called the surgery and the receptionist said the result was negative for a UTI and there were no abnormalities.

Was it just a dip test? Because those are wildly inaccurate and should arguably not be used at all. I'd recommend just taking the course of antibiotics if you still have symptoms.

I have issues with UTIs a lot and most of the time, the dip test finds nothing. Even when you send the sample to the lab, sometimes they'll not diagnose the infection. There is a lot of literature out there to suggest that when women have symptoms, they have an infection regardless of what the test says.

As far as I know, they did a lab test. I have done a dip test (I know they're rubbish) and that's positive. Not sure what to do...

It's Amoxicillin which I assume is safe. Doctor was aware I was pregnant.

The implication there then is that she expected you to take the antibiotics when you picked them up (unless contacted to say otherwise) so I'd definitely start taking them now. You should probably call 111 for advice as they will get a GP to call back and can get you booked into OOH if need be as you're still having symptoms.

8dpwoah · 03/07/2021 20:51

Amoxicillin is fine in pregnancy, I had it for a UTI myself. Certainly safer than letting an infection run riot.

Confused521 · 03/07/2021 20:59

Yes, you're right. Thanks so much. I'll give 111 a call now.

Fingers crossed you get it shifted, hope you feel well again soon!

111 said to hold off until Monday and do another sample. He said lab tests were very accurate.
