Iron tablets making me feel sick - how essential that I take them?

My blood count was 95 but had gone down in a week since my bloods were last taken. I have been prescribed iron tablets but they are making me feel really sick - is 95 a low reading and is it essential to take iron tablets or can I just up my intake or iron rich foods to compensate?

I don't know about levels, but what tablets are you taking?

There are alternatives which are not synthetic ie spatone and floradix. They are a lot easier for the body to absorb and don't cause so many side affects.

In my 2nd pregnancy, my iron levels were 10 and the midwife they needed to be around 11. So I asked if I could just increase iron in my diet before she made me have the pills and she agreed. Luckily it worked because they gave me really bad constipation so didn't want that again!

I literally ate 5/6 dried apricots a day, with lots of green veg and wholemeal bread. Also pork too and dark choc. You must recheck what your levels are with the MW first though in case yours are too low.

Spatone is great and very easy on your digestive system (unlike pilss prescribed by doctor). You can take two sachets a day if your iron levels are really low

Hi - my HB is down to 10 too so I've started ferrous sulphate. Advised to take them with food/after food and not with a cup of tea as it hinders absorption. I feel ok so far....no constipation as yet....

I think the Floradix liquid is pretty nice myself. Its basically all the iron rich plant stuff they tell you to have condensed into a dark brown syrupy liquid. Mmmm fruity. You can get it from health food shops.

I was taking the ferrous ones, and they made me sick, and i felt awful. Iv heard quite a few stories about them making people ill. Iv started taking spatone, you cant taste it, ust stick it in a glass of orange, and its made e feel a bit better.
