Peppermint Oil Capsules

Are these safe in pregnancy? Or am I better sticking to peppermint tea?

I've been unwell now for 10 days between diarrhoea and now constipation and trapped wind. I'm waiting on results from the GP but I'd like something to try and ease my pain in the meantime.

It hurts to even sit down, ginger tea isn't helping.

Any recommendations welcome Sad

Pre-pregnancy I swore by peppermint oil capsules to relieve my IBS symptoms. I've also been plagued with digestive issues throughout my pregnancy.

I looked into using peppermint oil early on & couldn't find a definitive answer. They're not known to be harmful, but that's only because no research has been done to evaluate their use in pregnancy.

I decided against using them in the end as I've had fertility issues & previous losses so I'm being extra cautious.

Sorry OP I'm not sure. I would ask the chemist but I can't imagine they'll want to give you them.

What has helped me is drinking lots of water, eating bran flakes, fruit & veg for constipation. I don't go overboard on the fruit & veg though as it can make things worse.

Also having a warm bath every night for trapped wind & using a wheat bag on my lower back. My doctor also prescribed me lactulose which has helped somewhat.

Unfortunately I haven't found anything to help with the diarrhoea. I'd usually go straight for Imodium but that's off the table so I've just been putting up with it & using moist toilet paper for the irritation 😂

Thanks everyone. I spoke to my midwife again today and she told me peppermint tea is all they can recommend so going to stick with and hope it helps.

My digestive system wasn't great pre pregnancy, it's 10x worse now. If I didn't laugh I think I'd cry Grin
