Before I found out I was pregnant I had some blood tests done. I got the results 3 days after finding out I was pregnant. This was about 5 days ago. I was told my iron levels were low & I needed tablets. I then informed the doctor that I’m pregnant. Couldn’t pick the tablets up for 2 days as working. I’ve now had the tablets for 3 days but daren’t take them because of the side effects. These last couple of days I’ve felt awful though so I know I’m going to have to take them. I wasn’t sure whether to wait until Monday now to take them and get something for constipation just incase. I didn’t know whether to start one a day to begin with to get my stomach used to it. I’m now worried that I’ve been anaemic the whole time I’ve been pregnant which is 6 weeks and the baby’s not been getting all it needs. Has anyone got any advice on taking these iron tablets, especially in early pregnancy or throughout pregnancy. What’s the best way to reduce awful side effects? What’s the best time of day to take if I only start off taking one?

I was prescribed the same (before I was pregnant) and I stopped taking them because I had horrendous side effects - the opposite of constipation but it was alllll day everyday. I told a male dr I wouldn’t take them anymore and he didn’t care. Prescribed more and told me to take 3 a day. Now I’m pregnant and still have low iron, spoke to a female GP and told her why I wouldn’t take them and she said they didn’t agree with her either and she doesn’t blame me. I now have ferrous sulphate to try but she’s going to speak to my consultant about an iron transfusion if they are concerned about the levels.

I’ve read to take with food or with orange juice but I cannot have my bowels messed around with in any way - it destroys my peace! 🙈😂

I’m certain I’ll end up with bad constipation. Things like this tend to go that way with me. It then makes me miserable and is on my mind constantly. Then I keep thinking about what I’m eating, when did I last go to the toilet etc and I feel like I’m going mad! I don’t know what impact it can have on the baby being anaemic do you? X
