Promethazine

Hi all I’m 11 weeks pregnant and have been taking 2 x 10mg of promethazine since I was seven weeks to help with really bad insomnia and rhinitis. It does help a lot. But I’m just drowning under all the negative stuff about the medication. Apparently it’s a “category c“ drug that has shown some bad things in animals and sites including the NHS say to take it for “the shortest time possible”. I don’t know what that means. And also dosage is unclear. I was given of the tablets by dr and they didn’t require a follow up. may only get three hours sleep without taking them. I’m also not successfully sleeping in the day. I tried going without last night and was still awake at 4am. I’m between midwives so don’t have someone to reach out to. Should I really be trying to stop them, which is stressful. Or is it ok? Could I have done damage already? I understand sleep usually gets better in the second trimester. I would appreciate reassurance.

I've taken 25mg every day of both of my pregnancies. With my first pregnancy, I was taken 50mg per day from 11-26 weeks. Personally, the cons of not taking it is worse than the cons of taking it, sounds like you're in the same boat.

On only 10mg a day, you're definitely fine. It's more of a concern because it's addictive so be conscious to wean off when you don't need it anymore.

*20mg wish there was a bloody edit button every damn day

I was on 3 x Promethazine a day during my pregnancy with DS for severe nausea. He is now 2 and absolutely fine

mummyh2016 · 24/06/2021 20:57

I was prescribed it 4 years ago for nausea when pregnant with DD. She's fine.

I've been on 10mg of promethazine every day for about a year. I'm 19 weeks pregnant & have continued taking it, all my scans & tests so far have been perfect. My midwives & GP have never raised any concerns or told me to stop.

Jean2006 · 17/07/2021 09:27

Did you take it right up until birth? I've been on it everyday since week 10 now 36 weeks and only needing 6.5mg at night to help me sleep. Will I be ok to take it right till the end?

MamaMoonbeam · 17/07/2021 15:47

My psychiatrist changed me over to sertraline from promethazine before I got pregnant so I can't help 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi there I know this is an old discussion but can I ask if any of you women took Phenergan at 4 weeks x

polkadotpixie · 28/04/2023 17:21

@MarieCC I started taking it at 5 weeks for nausea. DS is now 4 and perfectly healthy

MarieCC · 28/04/2023 17:41

Thank you@polkadotpixie how long did you take it until? Can I ask everyone what is a DD and DS?
