Chocolate when pregnant...

Just curious to hear how much chocolate did people have when pregnant and was all ok? I'm just thinking of the caffeine and sugar but I do crave it just wondering how bad it is?

I have been having hot chocolate fudge cake for breakfast some mornings so I’ve not abstained as much as I should have.
DC1 I only ate the odd chocolate bar throughout but I had GD with her so it was more for that than to stay off caffeine and sugar

There is no restriction on chocolate in pregnancy! Only our daily recommended max intake of sugar, which applies regardless of pregnancy. I ate it every day (still do now Grin )

There is in the context of caffeine.

This is why I went completely caffeine free with drinks. So I could eat chocolate without really worrying about it.

I totally cut out coffee and coke and had a hot chocolate most days instead. As well as the solid version

Chocolate is the only source of caffeine that I’ve not binned off during pregnancy. I eat… too much of it 😬 but I suffered from HG for months so I’m sort of making up for lost time I guess 😂 Planning to rein it in but chocolate is my weakness even when I’m not pregnant. Other than chocolate and potatoes I’m eating really quite healthily, getting my steps in and exercising every day.

A fair amount, I developed a real sweet tooth during pregnancy. I advise caution because if you end up with too much glucose in your urine they have to ask you to take a test for gestational diabetes - this happened to me after too many Easter chocolates. I was fine, but the actual test is a pain the arse (I can’t remember exactly what it entailed - drinking some kind of sugar solution I think - but I wasn’t allowed to eat or drink for a considerable amount of time beforehand which isn’t great when pregnant and hangry).

During the first trimester I had a cinema size bag of chocolate a day - this is no exaggeration or lie.

I’ve continued to eat it daily albeit not that big a bag, definitely a bar a day though.

I’m not advising you to eat as much as me and I know I’m awful for doing it. But yep that’s my answer x

One of my cravings was drifter bars so you can imagine I scoffed a lot of them. Cut out caffeine in drinks though.

Caffeine in chocolate is about 40mg per 100g of high quality dark chocolate. 100g is a lot of dark chocolate which is v rich - you’d struggle to eat more than 200g a day so 80mg. The safe limit of caffeine is at least 200mg and may be higher. You’d really struggle to eat enough chocolate to cause an issue.

Just be sensible as you would if not pregnant. I don't think cutting everything out is as beneficial as we think it ought to be. Enjoy your pregnancy. Don't make it a trial to be endured anymore than it is already!
