Checked my own cervix

So I'm 39 weeks pregnant and just wondered if anyone checked their own cervix towards the end. I have felt mine, I go far up as possible and get to what feels like a latex ballon through I small opening.
But my midwife went to do a sweep the other day and said that it's closed and hard. So I'm super confused because I can't fell anything hard up there. (My midwife also didn't want to do a membrane sweep because they think I've got a bigger baby)

Also I wash my hands everytime and my nails are short 👍🏼

Not done this before. I wouldn’t know what I was looking for 😂

FTEngineerM · 19/06/2021 21:14

No, but when I was in labour they were all chatting at hand over about how far up my cervix was like full on ‘it is up there you’ve just got to get right in there…’ 😢 mortified so I probably wouldn’t have much luck.

Did you chat to the midwife about what you felt?

Babyfg · 19/06/2021 22:24

Omg I tried this! I couldn't angle myself right so I asked my husband but he refused! I googled what to feel etc but I don't think I felt anything they said. I tried a few times to no avail . I also don't know anyone in real life who successfully was able to do it themselves, although I didn't ask any midwives as they might have better techniques (although I'm sure they would advise against it!) . Good luck with with your impending arrival though.

Had a feel the other day but couldn't reach far enough up.

ChocOrange1 · 20/06/2021 05:01

If your midwife checked "the other day" then it easily could have changed now.

Yafilthyanimal · 20/06/2021 05:18

Are YOU a midwife though?

Misty999 · 20/06/2021 05:40

Why like, just why 😂 i used to read loads of shit like this on the infertility groups when I was having ivf. Leave it alone its tucked up out of the way for a reason.

Luckyelephant1 · 20/06/2021 12:22

What's the reason you want to check yourself?

LLLTB · 20/06/2021 13:06

@Luckyelephant1 because I'm desperate for a vbac and the only form of induction the doctors will do is breaking my waters if I'm dilated enough.
They also don't want to let me go over to let my body prepare because they are saying "big baby"
So i wanted to know, I'm also familiar with my own cervix as I use to check when I was ovulating.

@LLLTB good luck! Remember that can’t tell you what to do though - if you go over they’re not going to tie you down abs cut the baby out of you. You can take their advice but the decision is yours so if you want to wait. A few more days they’ll just monitor you daily. I had a successful vbac a couple of years ago and had to fight for what I wanted as various consultants were very very unhelpful (midwives were v supporter I’ve though). I’m about to have another hopefully and I know I’ll have to stand up for myself again.

Same, they're talking about induction around 38 weeks but only if my cervix is favourable because of a previous section they won't use the pessary.
I'm pretty sure my baby has moved back to breech again though so think I'll just end up with another section sadly!

The last few weeks are pretty boring tbf 😂
LLLTB · 20/06/2021 14:56

@JewelGarden it's really hard I feel so pressured and all I want is a chance to deliver my baby myself. I was pushed into an early induction with my first and ended up with a emergency section so that's kinda screwed my chances up this time too.
I have to go into hospital on my due date next week for them to see if I'm dilated which I very much doubt I am. Then I know I'm going to have fight for extra time. They just make me feel like I'm doing the wrong thing and I should give up.

I’m impressed you can reach at 39 weeks! I couldn’t even manage my own bikini line Blush

LLLTB · 20/06/2021 15:08

@Passthecake30 haha yes and I'm measuring off the charts apparently 😂

MissSmiley · 20/06/2021 15:14

@LLLTB I'm surprised you can reach too!
My vbac2 baby was 9lbs 9oz, I don't think baby size is the most important factor here

Passthecake30 · 20/06/2021 15:39

You must be an amazing contortionistGrin
