Itchy swollen feet and really hot feeling hands, can I take piriton or anything? Have tried running hands under cold tap and taking off shoes but no help!!

Have you seen a mw recently? Without meaning to sound alarmist, itchy hands/feet can be a sign of obstetric cholestasis and any sudden swelling can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Is very likely to be neither of these but always better to be safe! (depending on how pregnant you are...)

Agree with L&L.

Am not sure about Piriton, so I wouldn't take it if I were you. Speak to your mw this afternoon and get her opinion.

Flier · 21/11/2007 15:25

agree with LiegeandLief, you need to see a midwife or gp. please, please phone this afternoon.

Cazzybaby · 21/11/2007 15:25

a liver condition that needs attention.

Flier · 21/11/2007 15:27

if i remember correctly its something to do with your liver. i got a blood test for it when pg. try not to worry, though, it could be for any number of reasons

Cazzybaby · 21/11/2007 15:29

Kool thanks for advise I will give her a call once finished work!

I would go and see your GP straight away Cazzy. If it is obstetric choleostasis you need it diagnosed ASAP. It may well be normal pregnancy swelling but the intchiness is a worry. I would try and get an appointment at end of surgery today.

LiegeAndLief · 21/11/2007 16:10

Obstetric cholestasis is a liver condition which leads to a build up of bile acids in the blood. Definitely go to mw or gp today, ring and explain about the itching, I'm sure they will want to see you ASAP and take some blood.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 21/11/2007 16:11

Please get this checked. It is very serious and you will have to be closely monitored if you have it. The only cure is the delivery of the baby. I had suspected OC with number 1 but he had to be delivered before the results were back due to another problem being spotted.

Good luck and make that call!

Pheebe · 21/11/2007 16:38

For info OC is usually associated with itching all over not just limited to hands and feet. Still mention it to mw but don't panic. I had itchy, hot and swollen hands and feet throughout my last pregnancy, DS2 is now 12 days old and everythings settling back to normal. You could try freezing a bottle water putting it on the floor and rolling your feet on it.

Flier · 22/11/2007 14:02

just wondered how you are, cazzybaby

Cazzybaby · 22/11/2007 14:05

Hiya been to the docs today, after speaking to the midwife on the phone. He did not check anything tho just gave me a big tub off gooey cream to try! Also some iron tablets???? Doctors they do make me laugh if it gets worse he has told me to go back!

Flier · 22/11/2007 14:07

oh well are you due to see mw soon? sometimes they are a bit more cautious with things and will check you more thoroughly (ime)

CarGirl · 22/11/2007 14:09

I would make an appointment to see your midwife and ask to be checked. You can take piriton safely whilst you are pregnant.

Cazzybaby · 22/11/2007 14:14

Might try and make appointment for next week and go back if it gets worse!

Hot hands and feet are normal in pregnancy, as is feeling warmer all over. Hot hands and feet can also swell a bit. Hot feet get itchy. O.C. is serious but likely to involve an itch that is so bad that you are scratching yourself red raw. Sounds like your doctor thinks it is not serious, good!

belgo · 22/11/2007 14:31

i had awful itchy hands and feet during pregnancy, it was nothing serious.

belgo · 22/11/2007 14:32

I meant to add: I did wonder if it was OC, but it wasn't in my case. It can just be a symptom of pregnancy

Cazzybaby · 22/11/2007 14:39

I'm looking forward to getting home and using my goo

i found going for an hour long walk every day kept the swelling down - if I didn't, the swelling would come back again.

Cazzybaby · 22/11/2007 14:47

Krikey I dont know where I would find the energy to do that once home from work!! Might have to leave that till once started maternity leave. I've been doing to foot exercises like they tell you too on the airoplane whilst at work!

OP posts:
belgo · 22/11/2007 15:21

the foot exercises are a good idea.

tasjaSAmuminUK · 22/11/2007 15:26

Doctors know nothing! Dont want to scare you but GO AND SEE YOUR MIDWIFE so she can check your urine!

I also had severe itching all over (espesially legs) and swollen feet. went to see doc, said it was nothing. a week later midwife came to see me and she checked my urine and bloodpressure. I had pre-aclampsia and was admitted the same day. At 32weeks.

3madboys · 22/11/2007 15:43

umm i am suprised that all your dr has done is to give your cream tbh, i am 26wks preg and have had itchy hands and feet and they are testing my blood for the liver condition mentioned on the thread. they think it is unlikely as i am too early on in the pregnancy and i also had the same itchiness in my last pregnancy, but the dr and them midwife both said better safe than sorry, so they are running the blood test.

i would go back and ask for it tbh, as it can be a VERY serious condition.
