@Sillysocks998 I have had chips from the chip shop a few times now… I usually have them with salad and a piece of fish (and I try not to eat all the batter) and that’s ok with my levels.

@Poppysmile I’m glad this group has helped you in some way, it’s not ideal getting the diagnosis but once you get your head round it and with all the help from people on here it’s much easier!
I would definitely have some of the treats you got for yourself, even say start tomorrow. There is a lot of info online or we all have meal ideas etc. I really try and stick to my 3 meals a day and get one snack In… Its not easy in the heat tho!

@Xiaohei 4 times!! I to take my hat off to you! You sound so positive about it and that’s hugely reassuring. Also to hear you’ve had natural births too and they have let you go on.

@CherLW next time I have a craving ill try them. We have battered chips at my local 😋😋😋. I had cauliflower rice and fajitas without wraps today. Was nice. Reading was 5.1mmol 😁👌. Just feeling really tired tho. I'm trying the oppo ice cream tonight. I read on here it's good as low sugar in it. Xx

Hope everyone has had a good weekend!

I've had a few high readings, think my concentration is slipping. Even just a stir fry I made with peas and sweet corn as the carbs gave me a reading just over 8! My own fault as did measure and just assumed a handful of each would be ok.

Then last night we had take away, I have pulled pork and small fries - perhaps would have been fine but I couldn't resist a single slice of DP pizza. Again reading just over 8.

I know they are not over by much but I've managed tea time well so need to get my act together otherwise I won't be able tell if my tolerance is changing or it's poor choices and I want to be able to explain it the nurse next time without her trying to up any meds!!

Hoping it's a blip, going to make a week of meal plan to try and help.

Only 5/6 weeks to go potentially so I know I can do this... just need focus!!

Kona84 · 25/07/2021 22:55

I think I’m getting into the swing of things.
I only had 1 high reading today- it was after a late lunch.
Lunch was some veggie chicken pops with salad and 3 new potatoes and a boiled egg. I did add a small portion of coleslaw and salad cream- I got an 8.1 reading over the 7.8 limit.
But then I remembered that while I was cooking i had 2 squares of dairy milk.
Maybe 30 mins before I started eating my meal. I was a bit mad with myself.

And because it’s Sunday dinner is a pudding rather than a meal - I had vanilla icecream and came out at 7.4 am hour late which is better.

I do have one question though: so I had late lunch at 6pm so took reading at 7pm at 8.1
Out of interest I took another test at 8:30pm and the reading was 4.7 which was as low as my fasting reading for the day.
Is this normal? Should I be keeping more steady rather than up and down?

CherLW · 26/07/2021 06:54

@Bubbles1st I know what you mean about the concentration slipping. I have had a couple of slightly higher readings over the week but I could explain them to the midwife if asked.. they also go down again for the next reading. Just bad choices on my account.

I need to do the same as you and get a good weeks meal plan sorted. I keep slacking with going shopping which doesn’t help!

@Kona84 I usually take my after meal reading 2 hours after finishing. I don’t understand why some people are 1 hour and some 2 hours. The midwife didn’t seem concerned about my lower readings when I last saw her.

@Sillysocks998 battered chips 😍😍 they would definitely be going on my after birth food list!! 😍😍

@CherLW yeah I read that some say 1hour and others 2.
The instructions I have had are 1 hour after meals.
I think it’s common in America to be 2 Hours but they have lower targets don’t they? Maybe I’m wrong

AdventuresAwait · 26/07/2021 08:56

Good morning. Hope all have had a good weekend and welcome to those who've joined.

@Kona84, @CherLW, I have to test one hour post meals. But they told me that the targets are 7.8 one hour after and 6.4 if 2 hours after. (Told me incase I ever tested late so would know the later target).

My levels seem to have dropped overall this last week. I have some that are 4.2 etc and all apart from one were below this week. I think it's partly that I'm used to what my body can tolerate but also, I've been off food a bit so don't want to eat very much, which I guess isn't great. Anyone else?

Moominmiss · 26/07/2021 09:00

@Firevie, how did you feel after the metformin?

I take 2mg every evening with my meal and feel fine on it now, other than it totally suppresses my appetite! Sadly for me the metformin alone didn’t help with bringing my fasting levels down, but now on 3 units of nighttime insulin too and that seems to be doing the trick. My level this morning was 4.3, yesterday was 4.9. Prior to insulin the lowest I ever had was 5.9.

And thankfully after I did manage a meal the other night my reading was great. Im trying to make myself eat at least a little something each meal time so that the diabetic consultant won’t tell me off too much when I see her on Monday! The only time of day I really can’t force anything down is breakfast, but I’ve never eaten breakfast before so I think that’s just me.

@CherLW my instructions are EITHER 1 hour post meal with a reading of 7.8 or lower, OR 2 hour post meal reading of 6.4 or lower. I tend to test an hour after unless I forget or am out without my kit, in which case I’ll test at the 2 hour mark. But I always put in the notes in mg GDM app which I’ve done, the 1 or 2 hour test.

CherLW · 26/07/2021 09:08

@Moominmiss @AdventuresAwait it’s so strange how it varies! I’ve only been told test before and it needs to be under 5.5 and then test 2 hours after and it needs to be under 7.5.

I’m definitely getting more used to what I can eat and pairing foods is becoming more of a habit now. I have been the same tho and not fancying much to eat where the weather was so hot!

OP posts:
Moominmiss · 26/07/2021 09:13

@CherLW it’s really odd how it varies! I didn’t even realise some people were given different numbers to work towards!

My fasting reading has to be 5.3 or below to not get flagged as red!

I’ve actually been finding that I seem to be able to eat most things as normal (other than cereal), and my readings seem to be ok. It’s just the fasting one I’ve needed help with.

I even had a pretty big helping of giant chocolate buttons the other night after my salmon and it still didn’t affect my reading. Trying not to push my luck though. Definitely don’t want to end up on insulin before each meal too!

AdventuresAwait · 26/07/2021 09:29

@Moominmiss, @CherLW yes it's so strange how the targets differ... I didn't realise they did either! My pre meal target is below 5.3.

Firevie · 26/07/2021 12:49

Hi @Moominmiss
I have taken Metformin two evenings now and my fasting hasn’t yet come down. Tbh it’s higher than it was without the Metformin. Previously it varied between 5.3-5.7. Now it’s between 5.7-5.8 so I hope it starts having an impact soon. I’d like to avoid having to go on two tablets if at all possible. My post meal readings are all fine - they’re usually in the high 5s or low 6s which is fine as I have to have below 7.8 after food. Will keep you posted how I go with my one tablet of Metformin. My diabetic nurse told me to up it two tablets if I don’t see a difference in 4 days but I have read it can take up to a week for the Metformin to kick in so May give it slightly longer than just 4days before I up the dose. Xx

CherLW · 26/07/2021 19:55

Hey all!
I changed how I do things tonight and now I don’t know if it would be the right thing! I usually have dinner and then 2 hours later do my reading and then have a nighttime snack/protein based dessert. Tonight I had a late dinner so just had my dessert of berries, cream and nuts straight after.

I’m now worried it might be a high reading! I guess I won’t know until the time but just Interested in seeing what you ladies do?

I had dinner and then sugar free jelly and whipped cream for desert and tested an hour later.
I got 4.9.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 26/07/2021 20:05

Dessert!*

CherLW · 26/07/2021 20:21

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken I always forget about sugar free jelly’s. I’m hoping it’s ok when I do mine… if not I’ll say it’s a learning curve if they ask me 🤦🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 26/07/2021 20:25

Exactly.
Mine are too low. I’m starting to worry to be honest. I have my first growth scan and meeting with a consultant tomorrow.

CherLW · 26/07/2021 20:53

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken I’ve had readings in the 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and 6’s and they weren’t concerned at all with them. When she saw the low ones she asked if I was eating enough which I definitely do as there is no stopping me. Baby is growing fine 😊

OP posts:
AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 26/07/2021 21:55

That’s good. Most of mine are in 2s-4s.

CherLW · 27/07/2021 09:32

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken maybe see what they say about the 2’s today. They might ask if you’re eating enough etc. Hopefully your appointment goes well today 😊

Hi All, been a bit quiet again. have felt a bit low. Scans are showing baby is slightly smaller but then i'm not very big myself so hoping it's just genetics. Doctors don't appear concerned though. I also got a high reading after lunch today (7.9 which is just over the threshold) but it's my second high in 4 days.

feeling a bit down to be honest and losing the motivation! :(

DressyGerbera · 27/07/2021 15:28

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken i'm almost 38 weeks now, but was diagnosed late-ish around 30 weeks. so haven't been on this diet for that long compared to others!
