@CherLW I had a mcdonalds a few nights ago, i did Google first and decided to avoid burgers and chips so just went for a chicken box, then made a wrap at home with with wholewheat tortilla and salad. my reading was 145 and it needs to be under 140 so not sooo terrible but i don't think I'll do it again. Will be sending hubby to bring me one when babys born i think!

We're getting married next week, very small, just us as my family aren't allowed to germany where we live atm, we'll do a proper ceremony next year, but his family want to go out for a meal after which is fine but they're wanting to go to a pizzeria! I hope they do salads too 😅 that is going to be a challenge!

Scotti84 · 01/07/2021 15:36

What's the advice you guys have got if your readings are a little bit higher now and then? Is that dangerous for the baby? Or is it more of a guide and a bit higher isn't much to worry about?

Bubbles1st · 01/07/2021 16:47

@CherLW I have had a couple of take always. One was a an indian, chose sensible dishes - chicken saag and mushroom Bhaji, no rice at all. Naturally non sweet dishes. My reading has been fine afterwards with lots of water afterwards but my fasting reading the next day has been high.

I also had a chicken and salad wrap and fries, again lots of water, but I did cheat and take a metformin tablet that evening which I assumed helped me stay under. Again a disaster the next morning though....

@Scotti84 with reference high readings, it only took a few high fast readings for them to put me on insulin. If you're high after meals they will quiz you as to why, if it's your diet choice they may suggest metformin if they think you shouldn't be able to eat what you are eating.

However when I said I was worried about high readings, the nurse said that they may be over target but it just helps them see what's going on and if only just over it isn't a very big concern. However I still feel bad, my highest reading so far is 8.6 when I forgot my metformin with breakfast and I felt terrible!

I don't think I could intentionally over eat as I just wouldn't forgive myself if those high readings did cause baby issues.

I won't even try the take aways again knowing it affects fasting for me so much.

Bubbles1st · 01/07/2021 16:48

@Scotti84 however... saying all of that, if I was getting married and forgot to take my reading after my meal I think I would be ok with that.... :)

bewitchingnight · 01/07/2021 17:58

I don't think I'm going to have any, as much as I would love to! For me it's one of those things where I probably would stress about what to have and I'd rest her just wait and have what I really want and enjoy it more after.

Having said that @Scotti84 if I was getting married I would have whatever and not test! (congrats!!)To be fair when I saw the dietician she said if I was having a baby shower or birthday etc to just have a bit of cake and enjoy it. I haven't though because, yeah it wouldn't be the enjoyable experience I was after at the moment.

AdventuresAwait · 01/07/2021 17:58

@Scotti84, I was told by my diabetic nurse that one high now and then is ok.

AdventuresAwait · 01/07/2021 18:02

@PlantMummy87, hi and welcome. I agree that it is worth talking to your midwife early and see what they say.

@CherLW, we are thinking of having a Chinese take away this evening. I'll let you know!

CherLW · 01/07/2021 18:15

Thanks for the take away advice ladies… it’s a difficult one isn’t it!! I had Nando’s and had chicken thighs, mash, broccoli and halloumi and after my reading was 4.9 I was shocked!!

Definitely let me know @AdventuresAwait the thought of a Chinese take away sounds so good!

@CherLW thanks went out for the lunch the other day and worried about what I'd end up eating. I had my lowest reading yet and it turns out that I didn't eat anything carby and combined with lots of walking round the shops I was way more active than normal too!

CherLW · 01/07/2021 18:59

@Bubbles1st I think that’s what was with me too, after food we wandered round which is more than I normally do after dinner!

I’ve been looking on the GD website and it’s given some ideas of take away which would be better so might give it a go soon.

www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/takeaways/

Even tho I do take quite a bit of what it says on here with a pinch of salt, it’s so different from one person to another

Thanks guys, obviously if it would harm the baby I won't stray but if a one off is ok I won't go mad but won't be sooo strict.

Gotta send my readings in tomorrow so I'll see what they say about them so far and see.

Cooked carrot soup today, tasted like crap. Tomorrow's attempt is banana pancakes!

CherLW · 01/07/2021 20:56

@Scotti84 banana pancakes sound good! I’ve seen some recipes for them! They are on my list of things to try too!

Does anyone know if oats and cottage cheese would be ok? I guess a carb and a protein?

AdventuresAwait · 01/07/2021 22:13

So @CherLW, I had a take away. Followed the Gestational Diabetes UK website advice and had a chow mein with some satay sauce. My reading after dinner was fine! I drank lots of water with it and afterwards. But I'll let you know about the morning result tomorrow! Xx

CherLW · 01/07/2021 22:18

So far so good @AdventuresAwait hopefully your morning reading is good too! The water is definitely a good tip, more water the better!

Bubbles1st · 01/07/2021 22:19

@CherLW until you're trying to get to sleep and end up out of bed 5 times for a last wee 🙈

CherLW · 01/07/2021 22:23

@Bubbles1st I am the exact same! Now every time I even wake up in the night I think I might as well have a wee! I wouldn’t mind if it was a worth while we’re but sometimes it’s just tiny so I think it’s just baby laying on my bladder making me feel like I need it more than I do 😂

OP posts:
AdventuresAwait · 01/07/2021 22:31

Yes @Bubbles1st and @CherLW totally agree with that! I'm up many times in the night for the toilet and then try to have a drink too as I read it helps to drink overnight. So then need to wee more 🤣

bewitchingnight · 02/07/2021 08:22

Haha same ladies, up at all hours to wee and chugging water in between 🤣

That's great about your takeaway @AdventuresAwait !

Scotti84 · 02/07/2021 09:14

I got some low carb low sugar museli yesterday, tried it this morning... never again, numbers higher than ever! I think sprinkling a bit on fruit and Joghurt is ok but eating it nearly pure is just not worth it. I thought I'd hit something good there, i miss crunchy food! back to carrot sticks and cottage cheese 😅

bewitchingnight · 02/07/2021 10:11

@Scotti84 what about some chopped nuts with the fruit and yogurt? I have almonds chopped up for the pretence of crunchy cereal!

Scotti84 · 02/07/2021 10:16

Thats not a bad idea, ill give that a go tomorrow thank you!

I think I need to stop experimenting and just stick to what i know works, even if it does get repetitive.

DressyGerbera · 02/07/2021 10:25

@CherLW i had KFC a couple of times 0 no chips, just the chicken pieces and had it with salad and it was fine. I also had the rice box with no dressing (and half the rice) and my reading was under 7.8 too.

@AdventuresAwait good to hear your reading after the takeaway was good! i've been nervous about trying noodles but might give it a go!

P.S i found a recipe online for cream cheese pancakes (just cream cheese and eggs) - sounds easy enough so if i give that a try will update you!

CherLW · 02/07/2021 10:31

@DressyGerbera I was thinking kfc and a rice box, or like you say chicken but no chips. I’ll give it a go sometime.

I’m starting to worry more as have my appointment with diabetic team, consultant and a growth scan on the 7th… just want everything to be going ok.

I have made these before, really nice! Just no honey

thanks @CherLW! bought loads of cream cheese in our shopping this weeks so will try replacing cottage cheese with that - weekend breakfast sorted!

good luck with your appointment as well, if your levels have been ok fingers crossed it will go well. I had my appointment with my consultant this week, she said: induction between 38- 40 weeks (earlier better) and used words like they won't 'allow' me and that it's hospital protocol etc etc. and this is even though baby so far is 50th percentile and my levels have been good. I pushed back on that and the consultant then said it's ultimately up to us. so don't feel pressured especially if baby is growing well and the scan results are fine.
