Urine sample for midwife appointment

Hello,
I have received a letter about my midwife booking appointment and it says to bring a urine sample with me. I'm not sure if this is a Covid thing in that I won't be allowed to use the toilets there. The problem is that I don't really have a suitable container to put it in. Has anyone been to a booking appointment recently? Did you take a sample with you or just collect one when you got there.
Thanks

I’ve had my baby now but was pregnant all the way through the 2nd lockdown earlier in the year I never to take my wee with me and the toilets were always open to use.

If you live near the doctors just pop in and ask them for one to use. At every following midwife app I just then remembered tk make sure I left with one so I could take it with me. But it you can’t get to doctor beforehand they’ll def let you use toilets there I think it’s usually just to save time, or have people say they don’t need a wee cos they just went! (Or in case they’re running late and you’re left waiting desperate!)

I would just say you didn't have a suitable container, although you could pick one up from your GPs if passing. Normally at your first appointment they will give you a sample bottle for you to fill and bring with you next time. This continues for each appointment, so you'll always have one ready for the next appoinment iyswim

Best just to call the surgery

My GP practice will give out urine sample bottles at the receptionists counter, maybe you could try asking your GP practice if they can give you one so you can bring a sample with you?

Having said that, I’d be surprised if the hospital couldn’t provide sample bottles, I’m sure some women forget to bring urine samples from home.

My booking appointment was over the phone so they didn't take a urine sample.

Why not pop to the doctors at some point beforehand and collect a sample pot and do a sample just before you leave the house?

I've been to three different hospitals so far with this one and all had the selection box of urine sample bottles out, and toilets open, so no worries.

Pre-covid I used to take a sample with me (got a spare pot at each appointment) but now I think they'd rather a fresh one, as it were, if anything!

Absolute worst case you get there and find you can't provide on the day you'll be able to pop a sample in in the next day or so, don't worry.

I am 17 weeks pregnant and my booking appointment was over the phone. When I had my bloods taken in advance of the booking appointment, the nurse gave me a bottle with my maternity pack "as apparently it's always handy to have one!" However, had my 16 week appointment with the midwife last week in person, and she gave me a bottle to do a sample during the appointment. No issues accessing the loo or anything like that. If you're worried though I think that chemists or the GP can give you a sample bottle. xx

BigRedBoat · 17/06/2021 19:38

Can't you just buy a sample pot before your appointment? They sell them at pharmacies.

faithfulbird20 · 17/06/2021 19:40

It says bring a sample but that doesn't meant from home. U can use the facilities there.

Hufflepuffsunite · 17/06/2021 19:40

You can just do it there. I forgot my urine sample pot at my last appt (16w) as I'd gone straight from work so I just did it there. It was no problem.

Garman · 17/06/2021 20:00

This has always been a requirement, nothing to do with covid or toilets being closed. Just buy a container in pharmacy.

llol031 · 17/06/2021 20:38

I brought just a small cheap Tupperware container to pee in and took a sample before my booking appointment (remember to wash the container…I forgot and it messed with the sample 🙈)

The midwife has then provided me with a sample pot to take home for the next appointment ever since

Like others have advised, I’m sure your GP will be happy to provide a pot if you asked

Onehotmess · 18/06/2021 08:10

A lot of practices won’t take a sample in anything other than a sterile container. Just go to the appt. if you need to provide a sample they’ll give you a bottle x

Rubyrecka · 18/06/2021 08:23

If you have a glass pot with lid u can clean out and use I would do that. I used a old jam jar! Thank fully this time around they have provided the bottle
