Pregnant with Mirena

So… had Mirena coil fitted in April. I was given tablets to stop any bleeding l, I had a few days of break through bleeds, nothing major. Last 6-8 weeks have had very sore boobs, been very tired and gone off tea and feel sick. Never occurred to me it would be anything other than side effects but for the last week I’ve been feeling what I can only describe as kicks. I’ve had 7 pregnancies and it’s not unusual for me to feel movement before first scan. Did a test today and it was very faint, I couldn’t capture it on phone. Just went to throw it away and it’s now a very clear line, where the faint one was. Going by dates I would be 13 weeks, could it ne possible? I’ve read about hook effect. Opinions? I would be over the moon tbh

I don’t know, I don’t think it sounds very likely.

There's no such thing as a false positive really from my understand, so if the pregnancy test says you're pregnant I would take that as you're pregnant. However I would go get checked out asap - if you get pregnant with the coil in the chance of having an ectopic is significantly higher, and given you say you only had a faint line at first but think you're quite a bit ahead, I'd really go get it checked just to be sure. Not saying this to scare you but better to be safe than sorry! Good luck and hope it all works out the way you want it to :) x

A friend of mine has a Mirena baby. He’s 20 in July.

If the positive didn’t come up on the time frame though it’s likely to be an evap line.

I don’t think the book effect is as common as some make out on here, and I’m sceptical on feeling kicks that early.

  • hook effect

It is possible to get pregnant on coils but less likely with mirena than copper.
Have you checked to see if you can still feel the strings? I had a copper coil and I couldn't feel strings when I got positive tests, GP and scan couldn't see it either but found 2 babies in there (now 6yr).
False positives are rare but evaps appearing after the time in the instructions is common. You can try diluting a urine sample and testing if you suspect the hook effect.
Speak to your GP ASAP if you get more positive tests as they will want to do an internal examination and refer you for scans.

As a few people have said, if you do test positive, push for them to rule out an ectopic as a matter of urgency... it’s much more likely with a coil 😊

I can’t feel the strings 🙈 I was in polls to stop all bleeding as I was losing a lot of blood so I don’t think it’s come out but I can’t find it. Done 2 cheaply pink dye tests today and both positive. Will call doctor tomorrow. I had a late miscarriage last year and I’m 42 🙈 so didn’t think I’d get this chance again so I’m hoping it’s all ok I don’t think I can do last year again
